A day before actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan announced to lead a protest against the Sterlite Copper Smelter plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu another big star of South, Rajinikanth showed his support to locals on Twitter saying that "he is surprised that government has not responded to the protest which is going on for 47 days."

He tweeted "One can't understand why the government, which gave the nod for the plant, is not taking any action and is just watching".

Thousands of locals and members of various associations are protesting on streets to demand the closure of the Sterlite Copper Smelter Plant for allegedly causing pollution to the groundwater and air of the area.

The residents have claimed to be experiencing illness related to skin problems, fainting, especially seen among children.

Part of the Vedanta group firm, the plant is a major copper smelter. Reports say that the liquid waste released by the plant is toxic and causing bad effects on residents of the area.

Locals are protesting for over two decades now which has led to the closure of factory multiple times in the past.

A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court after which the court demanded a fine of 100 crore but allowed Sterlite to fucntion.

Both Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth made their political debut recently.

In December, Rajinikanth announced to launch a party and to contest in 2021 assembly elections in the state.

After two months Kamal Hassan also announced his party in February.
