Former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister and DMK leader Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested by the Chennai Police’s Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Monday, hours after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail petition in connection with an alleged Rs 100 crore corruption case involving the granting of licences and other approvals to private schools. Justice V Lakshminarayanan dismissed the petition after the Chennai Central Crime Branch argued that investigators had gathered sufficient evidence suggesting the former minister’s involvement and that custodial interrogation was necessary. Poyyamozhi is a close associate of Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and a prominent second-generation leader in the DMK’s contemporary leadership. More than 177 pvt schools came forward According to the CCB, an unregistered association headed by one B T Arasakumar allegedly collected money from private school managements by promising permanent recognition, school upgrades and building approvals during Poyyamozhi’s tenure between 2021 and 2026. Investigators told the court that more than 177 school managements had come forward and that they had traced alleged transactions totalling Rs 17.26 crore so far. Investigators said Mahesh was named as an accused after evidence gathered during the inquiry, including material obtained from digital devices and statements recorded during questioning, pointed to his alleged involvement in corruption and breach of trust. The police subsequently invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the former minister, who has denied the allegations and challenged the case against him. The DMK has accused the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of using investigative agencies to target political opponents. Mahesh has separately approached the court seeking to quash the FIR registered against him. How the private schools case came to light The investigation originated in a complaint filed by Ilangovan, the secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools, Tamil Nadu, who alleged that money had been collected from him on the promise of securing permanent recognition, upgradation, planning approvals and other permissions required by private educational institutions. According to the complaint and details made available, the allegations initially centred on BT Arasakumar, the president of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, and other office-bearers who were accused of collecting membership fees and subscriptions from private schools while promising to facilitate official approvals. The complainant alleged that the association’s representatives had assured schools that they would help obtain no-objection certificates (NOCs), licences, recognition, renewals and other regulatory clearances, but failed to deliver on those promises even after collecting money. Investigators further said that the money collected from private schools was handed over to the minister as “party fund”. Tamil Nadu's opposition parties DMK and AIADMK have been targeting TVK Chief and Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, over a 137kg crystal meth haul by the Central agency DRI from the coastal district of Nagapattinam. Announcing the recent seizure of the narcotic substance, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said that this haul of 137 kg crystal methamphetamine, a banned synthetic drug, is one of the biggest narcotics seizures in Tamil Nadu’s coastal region in recent years. While the DRI made four arrests in the case, the DRI has not revealed the identity of the individuals. Both opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have directly targeted Chief Minister and TVK Chief Vijay, alleging that TVK functionary Boopalan was among those arrested by the DRI. According to the DRI, its officials acted on specific intelligence and conducted an intensive surveillance and enforcement operation last week, successfully uncovering a suspected coastal drug-trafficking network attempting to smuggle the narcotic substances to Sri Lanka. The consignment was intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka through mid-sea transfer. The value of the seized contraband in the illicit drug market is estimated to be in excess of Rs 100 crore, DRI revealed. AIADMK Chief Edappadi Palaniswami lashed out at Vijay by questioning his silence over this case. "When such an International drug mafia is being run with the support of the ruling TVK, for whom did 'Reels CM' run anti-narcotics marathon ? TVK local functionaries are threatening journalists who are reporting this issue," Palaniswami remarked. He also slammed the Police under CM Vijay, pointing out that a central agency DRI carried out this massive drug seizure in Tamil Nadu, while the local police could not. DMK Chief MK Stalin alleged that TVK Govt is carrying out arrests of political functionaries of opposition parties to divert attention from the drug haul linked to a TVK Functionary and the failed governance in Tamil Nadu. Referring to the white powdery substance he is seen handling, he said that it was a medicine that he was preparing for his infant. He reasoned that the infant was not consuming the tablet, and that they had decided to crush the pill, mix it with water and feed his child. Further, he expressed sorrow that an old video was being used now to make wrongful allegations of drug abuse. He also queried how narcotics substances could be used out in the open in a cricket stadium that is under police protection, in a stand where thousands of spectators are gathered.

A report by Tamil Nadu’s anti-corruption watchdog has highlighted allegations that UPI and other digital payment methods are being used to facilitate bribe transactions. The findings raise concerns about how corruption networks may be adapting to the growing use of cashless payments, potentially making illicit payments harder to detect through traditional cash-focused monitoring. The report has renewed attention on digital-payment trails, accountability, and efforts to curb bribery in public services.

With AIADMK and even coalition partner CPI-M also opposing, Vijay may be forced into a U-turn and look for an alternative coastal site.

Tamil Nadu’s upcoming bypolls are set to be an early electoral test for actor-turned-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The bypolls will provide an opportunity to assess the party’s electoral performance ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. Vijay launched TVK in 2024 and has positioned the party as a political alternative in the state. The contests are expected to draw attention to TVK’s organisation, campaign strategy and voter outreach.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s planned public appearance outside London's iconic skyscraper, The Shard, was abruptly called off after the UK Metropolitan Police cited severe crowd safety concerns. Hundreds of fans who had queued for hours were informed via loudspeaker announcements that the event lacked official police permits due to public safety risks. Following the cancellation, the TVK IT wing issued an urgent appeal asking supporters to refrain from gathering outside the Chief Minister’s hotel or along his travel route as he concludes his UK trade mission.

Tamil Nadu Police have registered cases against senior DMK leaders—including Nilgiris MP A. Raja, Harbour MLA P.K. Sekar Babu, and Rishivandhiyam MLA Vasantham Karthikeyan—following allegations of defamatory and derogatory remarks made against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar. The FIRs were lodged across Saidapet, North Beach, and Kallakurichi police stations based on complaints filed by TVK functionaries following statewide DMK demonstrations.

A fresh CAG audit has put Tamil Nadu's RTOs under the scanner. The report flags the illegal continued use of government vehicle number plates even after ownership changed hands — with 14,416 government vehicles found transferred to private owners without the mandatory re-registration process. The lapse means these vehicles may still be circulating with official plates despite no longer being government-owned, raising accountability questions about oversight at the state's Regional Transport Offices.

CM Vijay delivered a fiery 40-minute speech, growing visibly agitated as he condemned what he called a "river of abuse" against women — an indirect but pointed rebuke aimed at DMK's Udhayanidhi Stalin over his remarks targeting actor Trisha Krishnan. Invoking the 1989 assault on former CM Jayalalithaa inside the same Assembly, Vijay said harsh political criticism is welcome, but personal attacks on women never will be. He also hit DMK on corruption, the TASMAC scam, and law and order.

The long-running Cauvery water dispute is back in the spotlight as Karnataka intensifies efforts to move forward with the controversial Mekedatu dam project. The state says the balancing reservoir is crucial for Bengaluru's future drinking water needs and improved water management. However, Tamil Nadu argues the project could affect downstream river flows and harm farmers dependent on Cauvery waters. With fresh appeals for central clearances and renewed political opposition, the project remains one of the most contentious inter-state issues in southern India.

A political tussle has broken out in Tamil Nadu's ruling alliance over who should be the opposition's 2029 PM face. As TVK leaders increasingly push Chief Minister Vijay as a potential prime ministerial contender, Congress Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar warned that both Congress ministers would resign from the cabinet if TVK doesn't back Rahul Gandhi instead.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will officially open the sluice gates of the Mettur Dam today, September 1, initiating a 45-day water release for the Cauvery delta districts. The decision brings major relief to local farmers after low storage levels and insufficient monsoon rainfall delayed the customary June 12 opening. Following continuous legal efforts before the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Supreme Court to secure the state's share of water, rising inflows have now enabled the release to support land preparation and agricultural needs across delta regions.

Chief Minister Vijay's TVK-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu is just entering its fourth month at the helm of the state's affairs. Well within what is regarded as the six-month honeymoon period of a new Government, cracks are already appearing between the TVK and its major ally Congress. The disagreement has escalated, with some Congress ministers reportedly threatening to quit the cabinet if their party's position is ignored.
