The Tamil Nadu government has ordered comprehensive quality and alcohol-content testing across all state distilleries following public concern and a political controversy surrounding the swift clearance of liquor variants produced by Enrica Enterprises. Prompted by consumer groups and TASMAC employees demanding tighter safety standards, the state-run monopoly has directed officials to verify that all spirits strictly conform to permitted alcohol-by-volume (ABV) limits—such as the standard 42.8% threshold for spirits, alongside specific ranges for beers and wines.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s remarks on delimitation after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah have sparked a political row. Opposition parties have accused Vijay of changing his earlier position, while he has sought a clear assurance that southern states will not lose parliamentary representation.

Tamil Nadu’s political battle over delimitation has intensified, with the TVK-led government demanding that the number of Lok Sabha seats remain frozen at the current 543.

The resolution seeks a complete freeze on delimitation and argues that representation of southern states, including Tamil Nadu, could be significantly affected if future delimitation is based on a post-1971 census. The TVK has also called for the 33% women’s reservation to be implemented within the existing parliamentary structure.

The move has brought the TVK and DMK closer on the contentious issue, despite their wider political rivalry. While the DMK has previously demanded that delimitation be deferred, the TVK is pushing for an even stronger freeze.

The resolution has also drawn opposition from the NDA and DMK ally DMDK, with questions being raised over why Tamil Nadu is debating delimitation when the proposed bill has not yet been introduced in Parliament.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union government to withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, in its present form. Led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the state government argued that the proposed legislation's strict provisions regarding asset forfeiture, renewal cessations, and oversight could undermine the autonomy of charitable, educational, and medical institutions—particularly those run by minorities.

TVK urges Centre to withdraw FCRA amendment legislation

Even as the monsoon session of parliament has been marred by disruptions, derailing any meaningful debate on key bills, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay has taken the lead.Whether it is the amendments to the country's foreign funding law or the pending delimitation bill, the actor-turned-politician has emerged as a fierce opponent of BJP. On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu assembly approved a resolution tabled by the TVK government urging the centre to withdraw the FCRA Amendment Bill. Speaking on the bill, the state's education minister asserted that its provisions may adversely affect the autonomy of charitable organisations and educational institutions run by minority communities. This came barely a day after representatives from Christian and Muslim organisations met Vijay at the state secretariat. The delegation comprising bishops discussed matters pertaining to minorities. Amid growing pressure by the opposition, the Centre agreed to send this bill to a joint parliamentary committee. Let's take a look at how this bill would impact NGOs. The government has proposed the creation of a 'designated authority' who can take over control of assets of any NGO whose registration has expired or has been cancelled.Even institutions built with partial foreign funds such as schools and hospitals could be taken over. This is not all. Such seized assets can be sold off, proceeds of which will go to the central government.

Additionally, state governments have to seek Centre’s permission before starting any probe related to this act. Now, this is not the only time when Vijay has taken on BJP's policies. A day earlier, the Tamil Nadu assembly passed another resolution seeking the abolition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, or NEET, for undergraduate medical admissions. It also requested the BJP-led centre to allow states to grant medical admissions based solely on class 12 exam scores, citing financial and psychological pressure on families. Earlier in the day, the TVK chief also took a firm stance on the delimitation issue. His government tabled a resolution, requesting the centre to keep the existing Lok Sabha strength at 543. Vijay also demanded immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in the parliament and state assemblies, based on their current strength. The TVK chief highlighted that more women had voted than men in the last assembly elections. Interestingly, this resolution also got the backing of the DMK, after which it was unanimously adopted by the house. From the Cauvery water dispute to other issues, it is increasingly clear that Vijay is trying to emerge as a key challenger to BJP, and in turn, further bolster his party's standing in Tamil Nadu.

Even as the monsoon session of parliament has been marred by disruptions, derailing any meaningful debate on key bills, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay has taken the lead. Whether it is the amendments to the country's foreign funding law or the pending delimitation bill, the actor-turned-politician has emerged as a fierce opponent of BJP. The government has proposed the creation of a 'designated authority' who can take over control of assets of any NGO whose registration has expired or has been cancelled. Even institutions built with partial foreign funds such as schools and hospitals could be taken over. This is not all. Such seized assets can be sold off, proceeds of which will go to the central government.

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after AIADMK leader RB Udhayakumar took a swipe at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, making a sarcastic remark about actor Trisha Krishnan and her possible appointment as Deputy Chief Minister.

Udhayakumar alleged that the TVK government is appointing people closely associated with Vijay, including individuals with connections to the film industry, to government positions. He cited several appointments before making the remark involving Trisha.

Trisha has not directly responded to the political comments but shared a cryptic social media post about the “drama” surrounding the controversy.

The remarks have also triggered a reaction from Trisha’s fan clubs, with posters reportedly appearing in Madurai condemning the AIADMK leader. The controversy comes amid heightened political activity surrounding Vijay and the TVK ahead of Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a resolution opposing delimitation, urging the Union government to permanently retain the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats based on the population figures of the 1971 Census.

The resolution, moved by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, received support from the DMK, despite the party previously skipping Vijay’s all-party meeting on delimitation.

Vijay also called for the immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, arguing that the quota should be calculated on the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats.

The Tamil Nadu government has also taken strong positions on several other issues, including NEET, the proposed FCRA amendments, and the state’s anti-drug campaign.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution urging the Union Government to abolish the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and allow students admission to undergraduate medical courses based on the marks secured on the Class 12 public examination. The resolution was passed by the state health minister KG Arunraj, who argued that the fundamental structure of the NEET exam has widened social and economic inequalities. Every party, the ruling TVK, and its allies, including the Congress, the main opposition DMK, the AIADMK, Left parties and others, supported the anti-NEET resolution while the lone BJP MLA staged a walkout. The resolution notes that NEET is against, "social justice, equality, and rights of states”, it favours the “proliferation of coaching centres that charge exorbitant fees”. The resolution argues that NEET diverts the attention of the children from the curriculum to coaching and takes away agency from the states. “This test gravely undermines medical education opportunities for rural and socio-economically disadvantaged students,” noted Anuraj while passing the resolution. Also Read: ‘Who are the people with you?’- BJP questions Rahul Gandhi's vacation picture, Congress respondsPreviously, the Tamil Nadu government unanimously passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021 seeking an exemption of the state from NEET.
