
A total of 154 people were injured in a firework accident in the Indian state of Kerala early Tuesday (Oct 29). According to a report by the news agency ANI, the accident occurred during a festival celebration at theVeerarkavu Temple in Kasargod.
Speaking to ANI, Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan said, "About 154 people have been injured and admitted to different hospitals. This Theyyam festival is a custom of the people of North Malabar. Every family is conducting the Theyyam... The Theyyam starts from this Veerarkavu Temple. This is the start of this year's Theyyam."
The explosion was reported from the firework storage area of the temple.The incident took place at around 12.30 am.The injured were taken to various hospitals inKasargod, Kannur, and Mangaluru.
Visuals of the accident, shared by the news agency PTI, showed numerous people gathered at the temple to celebrate Theyyam as firecrackers nearby began exploding.
Confusion prevailed at the scene as people were seen recording videos of the explosion rather than moving away.
Kasargod MPUnnithan told ANI on Tuesday that the police were not vigilant about the festival. "By the grace of God, only 150 people were injured in this incident. The police were not vigilant about this festival," he said.
Local authorities said that eight people were in serious condition. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
Speaking to ANI,KasargodSPD Shilpasaid, "While bursting crackers, one cracker fell on the room where the crackers were stored. So the explosion has happened there. Since people were sitting very close to that room, many people got injured. This is what we have understood so far."
SP Shilpa said that more investigation was underway.
"The temple authorities have made many changes, which they have not told us about. First of all, they have not taken the license and they have not told us about the use of crackers. They have not told anyone that crackers have been kept in that room and they have allowed people to sit there," she added.
