Rahul Gandhi was elected Congress president earlier this week amid much fanfare from his party workers. Rahul will take over from his mother Sonia Gandhi, the longest serving Congress president in the history.
Rahul has his task cut out, and faces a huge challenge in the form of assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Rahul has been campaigning aggressively in Gujarat against the BJP which has been ruling the state for 22 years.
Speaking on his new role, Rahul told Zee Kalak, Zee Media Group's Gujarati channel, "I want to change the discourse which has turned very negative. The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about former PM Manmohan Singh, who has worked for the country for decades, is not acceptable. We have to change this discourse through love and harmony. And I will do that."
Targeting the former prime minister during an election rally, PM Modi alleged that Manmohan Singh had conspired with Pakistanis to defeat the BJP in Gujarat.
Outraged, Dr Singh issued a statement saying he is "deeply pained and anguished by the falsehood and canards being spread to score political points in a lost cause by none less than Prime Minister Narender Modi".
Modi also said that Aiyar, Manmohan Singh and former vice-president Hamid Ansari had met with the Pakistan high commissioner at a dinner in Delhi. And that the next day Aiyar had called him "neech".

"We expelled Mr Aiyar from the party after that," Rahul said today saying that such language was unacceptable to him and the Congress. Rahul had earlier demanded apology from PM Modi for attacking Dr Singh and said that he won't indulge in personal attacks which the PM and BJP do daily.
Rahul also expressed confidence that his party will win elections in Gujarat saying the results will be 'zabardast'.
He also talked about the elections. "This election will be fought on truth - the truth of note ban, 'Gabbar Singh Tax' (in reference to GST) etc. You go to Surat, Ahmedabad or any other place in Gujarat, all the small businessmen are saying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has destroyed them," Rahul told Zee Kalak.
This election is not about Modi, not about me but about the people of Gujarat, he added.
Campaigning has ended, and every political party is putting all its might before the second and final phase of assembly election in Gujarat. (WION Web Team)
