Late veteran Indian playback singer, lyricist and musician Bhupen Hazarika's son on Friday said this his previous statement on his father's Bharat Ratna award was misinterpreted.

"It is unfortunate that (some) people would completely misinterpret my public statement dated 11th February 2019 regarding the Bharat Ratna itself by sadly misrepresenting my view of it," Tej Hazarika, son of late singer, was quoted by ANI.

He added that "it will be an honour, for me and my family to be invited by GOI to accept Bharat Ratna on behalf of my late father".

"It'll be my privilege to receive it for him and his fans. As always, I'll strive to follow in my father's footsteps to bring light where there's darkness," he added.

On February 11, media reports stated that Tej Hazarika reportedly turned down the Bharat Ratna awarded to the renowned Assamese singer and his father, Bhupen Hazarika, over the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
