Prime Minister Narendra Modi today gifted cows to as many as 200 households in Rweru model village in Bugesera, Rwanda. The offer was made under the Rwandan government's Girinka Programme, as a part of a strategy to rebuild Rwanda's cattle herd.
More than 80 per cent of cattle were decimated in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. So far, over 2,03,000 families have been benefited from the Girinka Programme.
Girinka, is described as an age-old practice in Rwanda wherein a cow is given by one person to another as a sign of respect and gratitude
India's gift of 200 cows to villagers will further boost livelihoods of the poor in Rwanda, ANI reported. India has also extended a line of credit worth US $200 million to Rwanda.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to Rwanda — one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. He is now in Uganda.
