Khan had in his first speech after his election win said that he wanted good relations with India, better trade ties, and a resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

He also promised wide-ranging reform in Pakistan, saying all his policies would henceforth be designed for the poor and not for a tiny, rich elite.

Khan added that no country with a "sea of poor people and an island of rich people" could succeed.

He added that he had got into politics to build the sort of country that Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah had envisioned. The sort of country that existed in seventh-century Madina, where even the destitute were looked after.

He also said that he would not live in the prime minister's official residence.

Khan said he would be ashamed to live in such a palatial home when there was so much poverty in the country.
