Mizoram stone quarry collapse: 10 dead, several missing amid heavy rains
Mizoram Quarry collapse
At least 10 people were killed and several were trapped as a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district amid heavy rain on Tuesday (May 28).
Rescue efforts are underway for those trapped, but heavy rain and continuous landslides in the area are hindering progress.
According to an official, “a search operation has been launched to rescue the trapped people, but the operation is being hampered by incessant rain and landslides in the area".

Authorities have shut all schools and government employees have been asked to work from home. Several highways and key roads have also been disrupted by landslides, officials said.
Landslides triggered by heavy rains have severed Aizawl's connection to the rest of the country, blocking National Highway 6 at Hunthar, and disrupting several other key roads.

Storm Remal
Severe cyclonic storm Remal made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday (May 26) night.
More than a lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in West Bengal before the cyclone struck.
Cyclone Remal flooded dozens of coastal villages in Bangladesh and left many without power. Although official casualty figures were not yet available, media reports said that at least two were killed in Bangladesh due to the cyclone situation.
Nearly 800,000 residents were evacuated from vulnerable areas in Bangladesh, with volunteers assisting in moving evacuees to around 9,000 cyclone shelters.

Cyclone Remal disrupted travel and transportation in parts of southern Bengal. Several trains were cancelled by Eastern and South Eastern Railways in view of the situation. Moreover, operations at the Kolkata airport were also suspended for 21 hours.
The weather officeissued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states on May 27 and 28.
