
Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and PM Modi issueda joint statementin New Delhi today as the two leaders sought to strengthen ties between the two countries.
During the joint address, PM Modi said a new chapter had begun in India-Maldives relationship. "We wish success to people of Maldives, we want to strengthen trade ties with Maldives," the Indian prime minister said.
India and Maldives held delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
India has offered $1.4 billion in aid to the Maldives. "Our country recognises the long-standing generosity of Indian people," Maldives foreign minister Abdullah Shahid told WION.
During his address, the Maldives president thanked India for the warm hospitality as the two countries prepared to sign agreements to enhance people-to-people contracts.
President Solih had arrived in the Indian capital on Sunday in his first foreign visit. The Maldives president received the guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhawan today and met President Kovind.
During his three-day visit, the Maldives president will be meeting Indian business leaders and sign trade agreements with India to bolster ties which had received a setback during President Yameen's regime.
President Solih's visit to India comes after PM Modi visited the Maldives to attend Solih's swearing-in ceremony. Solih had assumed charge as head of state of the Maldives on November 17th.
