Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Phase 3 voting

The third phase of the Lok Sabha elections witnessed a decline in voter turnout compared to 2019. Across 93 constituencies spanning 11 states and Union Territories, the voter turnout in phase 3 stood at 64.4 percent. This is a 2.9 percentage point decrease from the previous general election.

States such as Gujarat, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, participated in this phase on Tuesday (May 7).This is a continuation of the trend seen in the initial phases where too the turnout was low. However, the final turnout figures may see adjustments.

In comparison to 2019, the first phase witnessed a 4 percentage point decrease in turnout, while the second phase saw a decline of about 3 percentage points. Second phase turnout was 66.71 per cent, a decline of about 3 percentage points from the last general elections.

Assam recorded the highest turnout at 81.61 per cent, while Uttar Pradesh marked the lowest at 57.34 per cent, a decrease from the 2019 figures. Key leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, exercised their franchise in Gujarat.

According to the Election commission of India, the voter turnout in various other states are - Bihar - 58.18 per cent, Madhya Pradesh - 66.05 per cent, Maharashtra - 61.44 per cent, Chhattisgarh - 71.06 per cent, Goa - 75.20 per cent, Gujarat - 58.98 per cent, Karnataka -70.41 per cent, and West Bengal - 75.79 per cent.

In this phase of the elections, there were 1,331 candidates vying for seats. Approximately 120 of these candidates were women. Across 185,000 polling stations, a total of 17.24 crore (nearly 172.4 millions) voters were eligible to exercise their franchise.

Following this phase, polling concluded in a significant portion of the parliamentary seats, with the BJP securing the Surat seat uncontested. The third phase primarily covered BJP strongholds, with the party clinching a substantial number of seats in the previous election.
