Lok Sabha elections 2024: Necessary things to keep in mind before voting

The first phase of Lok Sabha elections were held on Friday (Apr 19). The elections are being conducted in seven phases- April 19, April 26, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. The counting of votes will be done on June 4.
In the first phase, a total of 102 constituencies are witnessing voting. There are certain things that both first-time voters and regular voters need to keep in mind before they exercise their franchise at a polling booth.
1. The legal age to vote in India is 18 and above. Anyone below this age limit is not allowed to vote.
2. Before voting, ensure that your name is there in the voter list.
3. Check details such as the location of the polling booth, and the timings to cast your vote.

4. Ensure your name is registered for only one parliamentary constituency to avoid any trouble.
5. Present any one of the documents as proof of identity before you vote: Voter ID Card (EPIC), PAN Card, Aadhar Card, Passport, Driving License, Health Insurance Smart Card, Pension Document, Passbook, Service Identity Card (Issued to employees by central/state government/PSUs/public limited companies), MNREGA Job Card, Official identity card (issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs), and Smart Card (Issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour).
6. Once you arrive at a polling booth, a polling officer will verify your name in the voter list and request your proof of identity.
7. Post verification, your index finger will be inked and you will get a slip of acknowledgement. You will be required to sign in a register.
8. Hand over the acknowledgement slip to the polling officer, display your inked index finger, and enter the voting booth. You are not allowed to carry electronic devices including mobile phones inside the booth.
9. Once inside, you will see the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Press the button of your preferred candidate. If you do not wish to vote for any of the candidates, you can choose none of the above (NOTA)in the EVM.
10. A beep sound will confirm the selection once done.
11. After this, the VVPAT machine will print a slip of paper, which displays the candidate's serial number, party, and party symbol for seven seconds. You have seven seconds to verify your vote following which the slip falls into a sealed box.
