The government has said Reliance's Jio Institute will get "Institution of Eminence" status when it is set up, and not immediately.
The government added that to get IOE status, it will have to be set up in three years.Jio Institute is being built from scratch.
The government had got much flack Monday after it had announced the Jio Institute was one of the six institutions it was giving the tag to. Critics asked how the government could give the tag to an institution that existed only on paper.
The other institutions to get the tagare IIT Delhi, IIT Mumbai, and IIT Bangalore (which are all public) and BITS Pilani and Manipal University (which are private).
Jio Institute was the sixth institution on the list.
Reliance Foundation's founder chairperson Nita Ambani had said earlier that the foundation was planning to set up a university. She said the university would incubate cutting-edge research and innovation.
Ambani added that it would also nurture future leaders, musicians, scientists and Olympians.
Reliance Foundation is one of the country's largest private foundations.
On Tuesday, R Subramanyam, Secretary, Higher Education, said that since Jio Institute is a greenfield project — it will be built from scratch — they will for now only get a Letter of Intent which says they must set up within three years.
Subramanyam added that if they set up in three years, then only will they get Institution of Eminence status.
Subramanyam added that the Rs 1,000 crore over five years the government has promised to IOE institutions will only be given to the public institutions, not to the private ones.
"There is a lot of wrong propaganda is going on, it is not correct," Subramanyam said.
