A major fire broke out on Wednesday evening in Jammu and Kashmir's Trikuta Hills in Katra district.

Fire tenders were trying to contain the fire while two Mi-17s were put on standby for help in the case of fire going unruly.

According to the Indian Air Force, a light utility helicopter of Indian Air Force was sent to the recce in Trikuta Hills. The fire was successfully doused by the authorities.

Meanwhile, the pilgrimage yatra to Vaishno Devi cave temple from the new battery car track has been temporarily suspended, however, pilgrims will be able to use the old track to visit the holy site.

"A devastating fire broke out in Trikuta Hills of Mata Vaisnho Devi at new battery car track,'' said Deputy Commissioner Reasi P Ramaswamy G.

The fire affected scores of devotees and pilgrims who were stranded at Katra base camp. Thousands were moved to safety near Himkoti Marg.
