Prominent Indian opposition leader Sitaram Yechury's is in a critical health condition, and was placed on respiratory support on Tuesday (Sept 10) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Yechury, 72, is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was admitted to AIIMS on August 19. 

In a statement posted on X, the CPI(M) said on Tuesday that Yechury was being treated for an acute respiratory tract infection. The CPI(M) said that the 72-year-old was currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) of AIIMS.

"He is on respiratory support. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is monitoring his condition, which is critical at this time," the party added.

Previously, the CPI(M) said that Yechury's condition was stable and that he was responding positively to the treatment. On August 22, he released a six-minute video from the hospital, paying condolences to former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya.

Yechury had recently undergone cataract surgery.

Yechury joined the CPI(M) in 1975 and was arrested during the Emergency. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005 and is known for bringing several popular issues to the notice of Parliament and for raising questions on important issues. 

He is an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, the University of Delhi, and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). 

On April 22, 2021, Yechury's son Ashish died due to Covid at the age of 34.
