India: Two CRPF personnel killed in Kuki militant attack in Manipur

Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel including a sub-inspector were killed in an attack by Kuki militants in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday (Apr 27) midnight in the Naransena area.
The Manipur Police told the news agency ANI that theKuki militants "fired indiscriminately" at the CRPF jawans.
The deceased are from the CRPF 128 Battalion deployed at the Naransena area in Bishnupur district in the state.
According to a senior police official, “The militants fired indiscriminately from hilltops, targeting the camp. The firing started around 12.30 am and continued till about 2.15 am. The militants also hurled bombs, one of which exploded in the outpost of CRPF's 128 battalion.
According to a report, the deceased have been identified as CRPF sub-inspector N Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini.

A massive search was underway to find the perpetrators of the attack, police said.
Since May 2023, ethnic clashes in Manipur between the Meiteis of Imphal Valley and the Kuki communities in the surrounding hills have resulted in a devastating death toll as over 200 lives have been lost, and thousands have been displaced from their homes.
Last week, a bridge on the National Highway 2 was partially damaged in an IED explosion in ethnic violence-hit Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
The IED explosion occurred hours after gunfights broke out between village volunteers of the two warring communities in Imphal West district.
Kuki militants launched an attack on the same day Manipur held second phase of elections for the Lok Sabha. Voting was cast at 857 polling stations across 13 assembly segments in eight districts. Manipur witnessed a healthy voter turnout of 76.06% by 5 pm.
Fifteen assembly segments of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency went to the polls in the first phase on April 19 along with the whole of the Inner Manipur constituency.
