The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring a weather system off India's East Coast, which could develop into a low-pressure area and move towards the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu or the adjoining island nation Sri Lanka, during this week. In meteorology, a low-pressure area or a cyclone is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than in the surrounding areas. It is generally associated with rain, stormy weather, gusty winds, etc.

The IMD forecast mentions that the low-pressure area is likely to form by Tuesday (Nov 12), following which it could move westwards in the following days.

Heavy Rainfall warning for the entire week

For this entire week, the IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts spread across Tamil Nadu. From 11th November to 15th November, Chennai and adjoining districts, and several other districts along the Tamil Nadu coast, are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall is a term that is used to classify rains that measure anywhere between 6.4cm to 11.5cm within a span of 24 hours.

The heavy rainfall warning for this week has been issued for 12 or more districts of Tamil Nadu, and the adjoining Union territory Puducherry.
