In a major step towards bolstering its defence power, India has approved defence purchase of 3,000 crore rupees with Russia, news agency ANI reported.

The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the defence procurement deal which includes BrahMos missiles and the construction of two Indian ships, to be built in Russia, as primary weapons.

The approval has also been made for the procurement of DRDO-developed Armoured Recovery Vehicles for Army's MBT Arjun.

India and Russia concluded the $ 5 billion S-400 air defence system deal early in October this year.

More than 80 per cent of India's military equipment was of Soviet origin during the days of the Cold War, but since its breakup, New Delhi has diversified its weaponry.
