Delhi Weather: Forecast of light rain, thunderstorm to give relief from soaring temperatures

On Saturday morning (May 23) Delhiites received some relief in the form of light rain at few places and a marginal drop in maximum temperature.

For the past one week the national capital Delhi has been reeling under intense heat. The day temperature as gone beyond 45 degrees at the Safdarjung Observatory (Base weather station) on occasions leading to severe heat wave conditions in the city and it adjoining areas like Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad.

However, on Saturday morning (May 23) Delhiites received some relief in the form of light rain at few places and a marginal drop in maximum temperature.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a duststorm and light rain, over Delhi-NCR.

“Dust storm/followed by Thunderstorm with light rainfall and lightning (40-70 Km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at many places of Delhi & NCR, during the next 2 hours," said the Met Dept.

Delhi records warmest night

On Thursday Delhi recorded its warmest night temperature for the month of May in 14 years. The minimum at the Safdarjung Observatory (Base weather station) settled at 31.9 degrees Celsius (°C) making it the warmest May night. The temperature was five degrees above normal for the month of May.

The last time Delhi witnessed such high night temperature during the month was on May 26, 2012, when the minimum temperature recorded by IMD was 32.5°C.

Dry northwesterly winds and the absence of western disturbances across northwest India has caused the temperatures to rise.
