On New Year's Day in 2022, around 12 people lost their lives while 20 others were injured after a stampede occurred due to heavy rush of devotees at the Vaishno Devi shrine.

The incident happened near gate number three, which is located outside the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine atop Trikuta Hills.

“An ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of those, who died in the stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in Katra; Rs 2 lakh for the injured," J&K Lieutenant General Manoj Sinha announced at the time.

Notably, every year, millions of pilgrims visit the Vaishno Devi Temple after completing an arduous trek to the top. Last year, as many as 9.35 million devotees visited the temple which broke the record set in 2013 when 9.324 million devotees had reached the shrine.

Vaishno Devi is believed to be one of the most important Shaktipeeths (sacred shrines spread across country) in India and according to religious texts, the skull of Goddess Sati fell here.
