Contesting his first election, Kishori Lal Sharma of Congress defeated union minister Smriti Irani of BJP by 167,196 votes in Amethi.
Breaking the norm which had been followed for more than two decades, Congress had fielded a candidate from outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to contest the Amethi Lok Sabha seat.
Till now, Rahul Gandhihas been contesting from Amethi since 2004. Before him, his mother Sonia Gandhi, and father Rajiv Gandhi had also represented Amethi.
KL Sharma hails from Ludhiana, Punjab. Sharma’s association with Congress goes back to 1983 when he began working with Rajiv Gandhi.
After Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, Sharma worked with Captain Satish Sharma in Amethi and later with Sonia Gandhi as the in-charge of the Amethi constituency that she contested in 1999.
Sharma had also worked as in-charge of both Rae Bareli and Amethi seats. After Sonia Gandhi vacated the Amethi seat and moved to Rae Bareli, Sharma moved to the city with her.
Amethi had been the Gandhi family’s stronghold until 2019, when Rahul Gandhi lost the general elections to BJP leader Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi in the Lower House of Parliament from 2004 till 2019.
The Congress contested from 17 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. In the remaining 63 seats, the INDIA bloc had nominees from the Samajwadi Party and other smaller allies.
