Madrid, Spain
A day after unveiling Kylian Mbappe as their latest signing, Real Madrid has handed a contract extension to Luka Modric. The Croatian, whose contract ended in 2023/24, has signed a one-year deal to further stay in Spain.
“Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025,” said the club in an official statement.
Since arriving at the Los Blancos in 2012, Modric has been named Ballon d'Or winner in 2018 apart from winning multiple trophies as well.

Most recently, he won his sixth Champions League trophy while at Real Madrid with his fourth La Liga title as well.
Overall, Modric has won a total of 26 football trophies with Madrid - 6 Champions Leagues, 5 Club World Cups, 4 European Super Cups, 4 Ligas, 2 Copas del Rey and 5 Spanish Super Cups.
Calling him a real legend, the club statement also wrote: "Modric is one of only five players to have won 6 European Cups and has the most titles in the history of our club. On an individual level, Modrić won the Ballon d'Or, the FIFA Player of the Year Award and was named UEFA Player of the Year in 2018".
In his 12-year career in Spain, Modric has played in 534 games and has scored 39 goals in total.
The 28-year-old was widely speculated to retire after Croatia's group-stage exit from the recently-concluded Euro 2024. The footballer, however, dismissed any such thought.
“I’d like to keep playing forever but there probably will come a time when I must hang up my boots. I’ll keep playing on, but I don’t know for how much longer,” he said at the Euro.
