The owner of a traditional Viking ship used during the film’s production has alleged that the studio has not cleared the bills for damage caused to the vessel during filming. Despite grossing $300 million worldwide, the film is in the spotlight over its large-scale production, with the shipowner insisting that repair costs remain unpaid despite repeated requests. Owner of Viking ship alleges non-payment by The Odyssey studio According to a report by The Guardian, the owners of a Viking longship replica featured in the blockbuster say that the studio has failed to clear the bills for damage to the vessel caused during shooting. Peter Olausson, chair of the Vikingaleden association, told the publication that they felt betrayed by the injustice after the film giant’s alleged failure to cover the cost of damages. “We are only charging for the material cost, not the labour. Of course, Universal can afford this $6,000. We feel forgotten,” he said.

As the acclaimed romantic drama Dil Bechara marks six years since its release on July 24, lead actress Sanjana Sanghi is looking back at the life-changing milestone that introduced her as a leading lady to Indian cinema. Released on a digital platform during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the film resonated deeply with millions of viewers across the globe, serving both as a heartfelt love story and as the final on-screen performance of the late Sushant Singh Rajput. For Sanjana Sanghi, stepping into the shoes of her character, Kizie Basu, represented a major artistic leap. Expressing her enduring love for the film and celebrating its six-year milestone, Sanghi shared"6 years to this most special day. Always was, always will be, the most magical. Thank you, for giving Dil Bechara and Kizie Basu a permanent home in your hearts, and for celebrating six years of our film in the most special way, always. I am forever grateful."

Vikrant Massey’s Musafir Cafe, a slow romance drama, comes at a time when there is anger on the streets of India and spy thrillers and murder mysteries are dominating screens- big and small. The eight-part series, produced by Massey, who also plays the lead in the show, takes a practical approach to modern-day relationships, where love alone is not enough to make a relationship work. It reiterates that timing is everything, and that two right people can drift apart if the timing is not right.
Final Verdict

Love is perhaps the most favoured genre in India. While most shows and films talk about the process of falling in love, not too many address the complexities of modern-day relationships. Let’s hope the sequel- if it is made- creates a similar impact on viewers.

Musafir Cafe is streaming on Netflix.

Musafir Cafe, the new show on Netflix, is refreshing and real. Organic chemistry among the trio, strong portrayal of urban women balancing career and family, and earnest performances from Massey, Pinto, and Makwana make this a must watch.

Musafir Cafe review: Vikrant Massey’s slow-burn romance proves timing is everything in love

OTT has been slowly and steadily serving the same food with different dressings and presentations. But does that really make it taste different, right? Over the years, several lighthearted shows have been released that follow the chaos of daily life, life lessons, struggles, and much more, all served with a generous dose of sweetness.

The latest sweet addition to that menu is Kay Kay Menon’s Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya. What’s ironic is the timing of its release. The 7-part series drops at a time when the entire country is rocked by student protests over the NEET paper leak. Set in a part of New Delhi, the series feels like a mix of several OTT shows we have seen before. And yet, in parts, it’s different.

It touches upon several problems in society, and argues that the only real solution is education. While watching, there are several moments and scenes where both children and teachers are finding solutions to everyday problems. As the two or even three generations continue to find solutions to the same problem, but it's threads, not connected, but runs parallel to what we are seeing happening right now, in the same city, where the show is set.

Still of Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya

What is the story of Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya?

The seven-episode series is set in Delhi's Tinki Toli area and revolves around the government school, Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya. Every decision, even the one regarding studies, is based on the budget that they have to spend. The head of this series is Gyanseshwar Tripathi (Kay Kay Menon), the principal and the history teacher of ABV. In the list of do's to be done for the student, the last thing that comes is the student, and then the education. While with no resources and money, they have to take, or basically snatch from the PA (Archana Puran Singh) of a local politician. With his laid-back approach, he's running the school. But he gets active when he learns about the government-sponsored training programme in Cambridge. But there's a catch to achieve this. So for this, he gets on a mission to get the 10th class batch to get the best marks in the session. While making the students study is a hard job, and to achieve all this, he had to go through several hardships.

In education, what's strange is how hard it all is

Directed by Himank Gaur and written by Biswapati Sarkar, Akshay Asthana, Nupur Pai, Tatsat Pandey, and Meghna Srivastava, the best thing about this show is the length of each episode; each one lasts only half an hour. This is the show’s biggest asset. The short runtime works in its favour, helping cover up its faults and shortcomings.

With Menon as the lead, the series has a light tone. It doesn’t have a lot to discuss, but it’s rather a humorous commentary on the problems that we ought to discuss.

While education and young children are the focus, the show also briefly explores the lives of the teachers. The characters feel familiar. They give you a déjà vu of several other characters we have seen before, but they’re still enjoyable.

In the show, Prasanna Bisht plays the new teacher, Kanchan, who deals with students peacefully, a surprising and challenging path to take. Then there’s the strict teacher, Hansraj Meena (Abhimanyu Singh). But behind his tough image is a man who loves putting mehendi designs on hands. So every teacher is different, every student is different. And when all these ingredients come together, the dish we get is enjoyable and delicious. But with that, I’m also not saying that the show is all and all perfect. There isn’t much time, and it’s not explored enough to expect much commentary. Yes, it comically tackles several serious issues, whether it’s how education is handled, how non-progressive parents address education, how government teachers function, and how everything is run under the orders of MLA Goldy (Deven Bhojani). But all it boils down to is one thing: education, and where it is concerned, the odd part is the struggle.

With the light tone, the series is short enough that it doesn't bore you out. And all this, with the pack of actors who have given a worthy performance, which is enough to entertain. While the show, as I said earlier, doen't offer anything new or surprising. Its commentary is something that you will laugh at, but it is the issue that has been addressed again and again, but remains unaddressed to a very extent. That said, a few scenes do feel a bit overdone and feel like that social cause. The short runtime helps here; even when something drags, it’s over quickly, and the show moves on.

With a promising cast, this seven-episode show is light-hearted, humorous, and an easy watch, perfect for a weekend or any casual day when you have nothing to watch. Ironically, even if Jantar Mantar news has you overloaded, this show will have you talking about protests and the education system anyway.

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya is streaming on Prime Video.

Kay Kay Menon's show is all about the education system and raises serious questions on the topic, but with laughs. Directed by Himank Gaur, the series is light-hearted and funny, and will keep you thinking about why student protests are happening at Jantar Mantar.

As the two or even three generations continue to find solutions to the same problem, but it's threads, not connected, but runs parallel to what we are seeing happening right now, in the same city, where the show is set.

Kay Kay Menon's show is all about the education system and raises serious questions on the topic, but with laughs. Directed by Himank Gaur, the series is light-hearted and funny, and will keep you thinking about why student protests are happening at Jantar Mantar.

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya review: Kay Menon teaches, trolls, and questions our education system

An evil mining mafia that is looking to loot mineral wealth and finish off indigenous people in India; Indian government officials that are insulted and betrayed by system that they work under; a weapon smuggling mafia that has tentacles spread across politico-business circles in India; Pakistani terrorists plotting against India, communal riots in Tamil Nadu; a fictional African nation that is destabilized into chaos and civil war by external forces; Terminator-like weaponized robots and drones. Roll all of these disparate themes and elements into a plot that spans over three hours and we get Jana Nayagan, the H Vinoth directorial, which is the farewell film of Tamil actor Vijay(popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay). Jana Nayagan is touted as Vijay's final film, bringing a close to a career that started when he was a child artist in 1984.

No prizes for guessing that the solutions to all the aforementioned geopolitical and Indian politico-societal problems come from one man - Thalapathy Vetri Kondan(TVK) - the protagonist played by Vijay. Aside from being his final film, Jana Nayagan was also meant to be a political vehicle for actor-politician Vijay to gain further inroads into the hearts and minds of the people of his home state Tamil Nadu.

Context: Jana Nayagan was meant to hit the screens in January 2026, but its release was delayed due to a censor certificate hold-up, a legal battle, and an online leak of the film. Vijay was originally an actor-politician when the film was originally set for release in January 2026. With barely two years of experience in politics, Vijay's fledgling political party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam(TVK) won the April 2026 Assembly polls, and he assumed office as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in May 2026.

A still from Jana Nayagan

As much as the film is meant to give hardcore Vijay fans their money's worth in terms of action, these predominantly gory fight sequences are also interspersed with sentimental scenes or tragedies or triumphant moments. However, the central messaging is clear: protagonist Thalapathy Vetri Kondan has a magic bullet to address every issue that exists. Literally speaking, it need not always be a bullet. Often, the solution happens to in the form of a sword, a machete, a whip, a rusted iron pipe and what not! From ragtag rowdies to suit-boot baddies, Thalapathy Vetri Kondan beats them all, amply aided and abetted by the beats of Anirudh Ravichander's music. The score adds heft to all these sequences and helps adequately elevate them into fan-favourite "mass moments".

Seen from the perspective of a political film, Jana Nayagan also makes blatant attempts to position Vijay as a political successor of the late Chief Minister MG Ramachandran(popularly known as MGR), who is widely the most famous actor-politician in Tamil Nadu. There are scenes where the protagonist is prominently juxtaposed with MGR's image; the protagonist sings MGR songs while beating up corrupt politicians. Things even reach a point where a framed photo of MGR appears to speak to the protagonist, Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, and even hands him a whip to lash the baddies. Well, it just doesn't stop with the Late MGR. Even Ministers from Chief Minister Vijay's cabinet in Tamil Nadu are seen making appearances in song sequences or crucial moments.

Though the film did include a few themes related to women's empowerment, they too were based on the male protagonist's worldview and not based on the will and wishes of the female lead(played by Mamitha Baiju). Ironically, the same film features another female lead (played by Pooja Hegde), which lacked any depth or purpose, other than falling instantaneously in love with the protagonist. Another female lead(the IAS Officer character played by Priyamani) did have a role of some significance in the larger plot. However, her screen time lasted barely a few fleeting moments. It almost felt like a case of too little, too late.

Vijay and Pooja Hegde in Jana Nayagan

While Bobby Deol played the villain character well, poor writing appeared not to do justice to his talent and ability. Though there is an attempt to showcase an elaborate backstory to establish this villain character, it tends to veer more towards tiresome territory. Similarly, Prakash Raj was made to play a corrupt politician, a role that he has played in innumerable films. However, that too felt inadequate because of the writing.

For the Thalapathy Vijay maniacs(Thalapathy Veriyans, as they are called in Tamil), Jana Nayagan could certainly offer many big mass moments to celebrate while viewing on the big screen with the blaring BGM. However, even that grand celebration risks getting drowned in a plot that force-fits too many themes and too many characters.

Jana Nayagan attempts to solve every conceivable issue—from local corruption and mining mafias to international terrorism and AI warfare—by framing Vijay’s character as the sole saviour for all problems. Is it a befitting finale to Vijay's acting career, though? Let's find out.
