Bollywood star Kriti Sanon seems unfazed amid the controversy around her attire in a recent Raksha Bandhan advertisement. Kriti, in fact, marked the special day by sharing a photo with her sister, Nupur Sanon, and even took a subtle yet sharp dig at the trolls who have been policing her about her outfit.

Kriti's Rakhi gives a befitting response to trolls

In her Raksha Bandhan post, Kriti chose to share only a photo of her and her sister Nupur Sanon’s hands as the two showed their respective Rakhis. The picture shows the sisters holding hands. Kriti refrained from showing their outfits, seemingly choosing not to add fuel to the ongoing debate. Instead, her caption spoke about her sentiments around the festival.

She also took a jibe at the trolls and made it clear that she was focusing on her relationship with her sister on the special day instead of paying heed to the social media chatter. She wrote in the caption, "While the Rakhi fashion committee is still in session, we’re focusing on what really matters. Happy Rakhi to all."

The ad featured Kriti celebrating the festival, dressed in a bralette, a shrug and a skirt.

What started as criticism of a celebrity’s outfit soon turned into a political and religious debate online, with several people accusing Kriti of hurting Hindu sentiments by wearing the attire in an advertisement centred on a Hindu festival.

BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut too criticised Kriti and wrote on Instagram, “It's a wonderful time to be a woman. Our closets are full of variety of clothes, today's woman is a global woman. From cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez, from all the options that are available to us today why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha the advert looks intentionally creepy!”

Kriti defended herself

Addressing the backlash, Kriti defended herself and wrote on Instagram. "Imagine being this bothered by what another woman chooses to wear. Respectfully, evolve. PS: I'm the one she tied the rakhi to, and if I don't have a problem with it, why do you? The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear; it is in the emotions and meaning you attach to the traditions."

Kriti added, "Raksha Bandhan is a bond of protection. My sister and I tie rakhi to each other. We know we can protect each other just as much as a brother would. We pray for each other's health, happiness, and long life. Kriti Sanon took to social media to share a photo of her Rakhi celebration with her sister Nupur Sanon. In the caption Kriti stated the sisters were focussing on ‘what really matters’ and took a sly dig at her trolls.

Kriti's Rakhi gives a befitting response to trolls In her Raksha Bandhan post, Kriti chose to share only a photo of her and her sister Nupur Sanon’s hands as the two showed their respective Rakhis.

According to a PTI report, the Additional City Civil and Sessions Court in Bengaluru passed an ex-parte temporary injunction on August 22, restraining the publication or circulation of false or defamatory content concerning the film.

The suit was filed by KVN Productions LLP against several defendants, including X Corp, as well as an unidentified “John Doe” defendant representing unknown individuals. Importantly, the order is temporary and is currently in force only until the next hearing on September 28.

The court also specified that the injunction cannot be used for purposes beyond those for which it was granted. It further stated that the injunction would stand vacated without further notice if the plaintiff failed to comply with the conditions imposed by the court. The producers had sought the ex-parte injunction under Order 39, Rules 1 and 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure.

What’s the controversy around Toxic reviews?

Toxic was released in theatres on August 26 and has received mostly negative responses from critics and audiences. The appearance of legal notices following critical reviews has now opened up discussions online about the makers wanting to control the reviews around the film.

It is important to note that the makers have sent legal notices to those alleging defamatory or flase content which is not same as a critical review of the film.

The court's order specifically concerns false or defamatory material, while a legal notice from the producers' authorised representative is not, by itself, a judicial finding that a particular review is defamatory.

Toxic has received negative reviews not just from critics but the public as well. The reviews seemingly have affected the box office performance of the film, which reportedly dipped from Rs 101 crore nett to approximately Rs 36 crore in India in its second day.

About Toxic

Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic stars Yash in dual roles, alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. The film is produced by Venkat K Narayana and Yash under KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations LLP.

WION’s review of Toxic

In her review of the film, Shomini Sen wrote, “It takes a special kind of patience to understand the film in its entirety and then retell it. They say too many cooks spoil the broth. In Toxic’s case, too many characters spoil the plot! The first half is chaotic and takes ages to establish the story. Too many names are thrown in, and the maker takes huge artistic liberties in creating a world that feels distinctly removed from the society that India was in 1947.” Read full review of Toxic here.
