Why doesn’t Ryan Gosling play dark roles anymore? Actor reveals

Ryan Gosling startedacting at a very young age. However, he got his breakthrough with the 2004 movie The Notebook. And since then, he has played variety of roles in all sorts of genres, whether it's action, thriller, drama or romance. After cementing his place in the world of entertainment, Ryan is now a little careful with the kind of roleshe opts to play. And, the reason behind doing sois his family.

While promoting his movie The Fall Guy, theactor revealed that he's now avoiding taking on darker projects.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the Oscar-nominated actor said he takes a decision with his longtime partner Eva Mendes before taking up the roles.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he said.

“This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva [Mendes], and we make them with our family in mind first.”

Ryan and Eva share two daughters Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. Over the years, the couple have kept their daughters away from the limelight, and have refrained from sharing any details of them.

Ryan shared that his 2016 Oscar-nominated movie La La Land, was the first movie that he signed by keeping hisfamily in mind.

Elaborating on picking a project with a different perspective, he explained, “It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.’”

Mentioning his recent role as Ken in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, Gosling added, “Their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration. I thought, they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”

The actor admitted how parenthoodchanged his perspective, adding that he has become "way more conscious of everything" since having children. "I’m trying to just figure out who they are and be there for them in the way that I can," he expressed. "You just want to be everything they deserve."
