Liam Payne is no more. The One Direction singer died on Wednesday (Oct 16) after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Argentina. Since the tragic news of Payne, the world is remembering the British rock star for his music and his time with the band mates among other things. Amidst this, some fans have also brought up his struggles with alcoholism, stardom and times when he openly discussed his mental health issues.
Over the years, Payne has been vocal about his struggles with fame, mental health and alcoholism.
In 2019, the singer told The Sun about facing personal struggles when going on and performing in One Direction shows.
“Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on,” he told The Sun.
In 2015, the group even had to cancel the show because he was not in a good state. Recalling the October 2015 incident, he shared, “And unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much. That was it,” he explained. “The more we did, I just don’t think we stopped and celebrated enough how great things were and I think that’s what got on top of us in the end.”
In a different interview, the actor talked about his struggles with alcoholism. Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, he shared, ''I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where’s rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I’m very good at hiding it. No one would ever have seen it.''
Talking about drinking, he shared, “The problem was… the best way to secure us, because of how big it got, was to lock us in a room. And, of course, what is in the room? A minibar,” he explained.
“At a certain point, I just thought, ‘Well, I’m going to have a party for one,’ and that just seemed to carry on throughout many years of my life. It was wild, but it was the only way you could get the frustration out in the day,” he said
Sharing how his drinking struggles worsened during the pandemic, he said, “It was just getting earlier and earlier. Easier and easier to go to. What I’ve found more than anything with the alcohol and stuff is boundaries. There were no boundaries. So, if you’re on Zoom you quite easily hide that you might be a little bit tipsy at the point you shouldn’t be,” he said.
