A high sex drive might mean that the person has certain "dark" personality traits, a study suggests. Researchers say that those who have a high libido, share several of these not-so-desirable personality features.

Two of the biggest indicators of a high sex drive and porn use were found to be narcissism and sadistic behaviour.

Narcissism is when a person accords himself the most importance and lacks empathy for others, while sadism is when one derives pleasure, especially sexual pleasure, from inflicting pain on others.

The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. It focusses specifically on four dark personality traits - narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and everyday sadism.

Researchers assessed sex drive and pornography use among hundreds of Canadian university students while, at the same time, noting down how much they adhere to these four "dark" personality traits.

"The results were that narcissists and everyday sadists reported the highest sex drive," Delroy Paulhus, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia, told Newsweek.

"The former seems linked to a fulsome self-confidence and excitement-seeking; the latter may be underlain by a hyper-sexuality that requires escalating forms of sexual stimulation, such as BDSM activities."

Narcissism, sex drive and men

The top scores in dark personality traits, sex drive and pornography use were notched by male members.

Paulhus admits that the findings are based on observational data, and do not establish a relationship between the two. However, he believes there is a genetic influence when it comes to both personality and sex drive, especially in men.

He further believes that the study is important because "a high sex drive may lead to criminal and or negative workplace consequences" and "is most common is conflict with romantic partners."

However, since the study used college students as participants, it is unclear whether it can be generally applied to everyone.
