Joker: Folie a Deux experienced a significant decline in its second week of release, following an already disappointing opening weekend. The sequel has underperformed compared to the 2019 film, which was well-received by both audiences and critics.
Despite being highly anticipated alongside films like Deadpool and Wolverine, the movie fell short of expectations.
Opening week in the USA
The film's opening weekend in the US brought in USD 38 million, considerably less than the projected estimate of USD 50 to USD 70 million. The second week proved even more challenging, with earnings that rose just to USD 7 million across 4,102 US theatres. This makes for an unexpected 81 per cent drop, marking the steepest decline ever recorded for a comic book-based film. It also ranks among the most severe domestic declines for any film so far.
According to Box Office Mojo, which has tracked box office data since 1982, this drop places Joker: Folie a Deux in the Top 20 biggest second-weekend declines ever recorded. The previous record for steepest decline was held by The Marvels, released in 2023, which saw a 78 per cent drop in its second week, according to The Guardian.
Global collection
Globally, the Joaquin Phoenix starrer has earned USD 165 million, which is still far from recouping its USD 200 million budget. On the contrary, the original Joker was produced for just one-third of the sequel's budget and grossed USD 248.4 million worldwide in its opening weekend alone.

The 2019 film went on to earn USD one billion globally, becoming the first R-rated film to reach this milestone and holding the title of highest-grossing R-rated film until it was surpassed by Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024.
Remarks
Joker 2, which is a musical, for most part has failed to impress the critics and has been called “boring” and “startingly dull”. The film also features Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
