Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez has distanced herself from ex-Sukesh Chandrashekhar who is currently in jail for fraud and money laundering. While Jacqueline has maintained that she has no ties with him now and had no knowledge of what he did when they were together, the court asked her to explain the source of all the gifts that he gave her while they were romantically involved.
Jacqueline’s counsel has claimed in the Delhi High Court that she was unaware of the illicit origin of the gifts she received. The gifts were allegedly part of a Rs 200 crore money laundering case involving conman Sukesh Chandrashekar.
The actor’s counsel has now challenged the charge sheet filed against her in the Rs 200 crores money laundering case.
Her counsel argued that she had no idea where he got the money for the gifts and that there was anything illegal in his earnings. The matter is now listed for further arguments on November 26.
Meanwhile, Justice Anish Dayal raised a query, "Whether there is a duty upon an adult person to know the source of the gift one receives."
Jacqueline is represented by senior advocate Siddharth Agrawal, along with Prashant Patil and Shakti Pandey. He argued that she did not know that the gifts she received were part of the proceeds of crime. She was not aware that the gifts she received from Sukesh Chandrasekar were bought out of money allegedly extorted from Aditi Singh.
"It is also not the case of ED that she was aware that gifts she received were part of proceeds of crime," senior counsel argued. He said that while this was an omission, it wasn’t illegal by any standard. Hence, this was not actionable in law.
Her counsel further added that she was convinced by the co-accused Pinky Irani that Sukesh had high political connections and was a political fixer. He received calls from the Home Ministry office. He was made a scapegoat for his political connections, according to her previous beliefs.
They added that Jacqueline cut all ties with him after a money laundering case was initiated against him.
