Amidst reports of Dharma Productions being taken over by some big corporates in the industry, the X (previously known as Twitter) and Instagram bio of Dharma Productions has caught everyone’s attention on social media. The bio states the obvious: "Jigra o, ab ki teri baari oh! Owned by Karan Johar & CEO Apoorva Mehta.”
The change has created a lot of social media buzz with many reactions from film buffs, especially Dharma fans.
Reports or rumours?
A report in The Economic Times quoted a source who revealed that a certain company plans to acquire a stake in Dharma Productions. This particular company also acquired a minority stake in Balaji earlier and may think of doing the same with Dharma.
According to the same report, Dharma Productions which is owned 90.7 per cent by Karan Johar and 9.24 per cent by his mother, Hiroo Johar, is actively looking for strategic partnerships.
“Karan Johar has been exploring ways to monetise his stake for some time, but previous deals failed due to valuation issues,” a source familiar with earlier negotiations told the media outlet.
Is anyone buying Dharma at all?
Rumours have circulated about Saregama, a company under the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, potentially acquiring Dharma Productions. However, a Mint report suggests that this deal is not finalised and might not turn into reality.
Dharma Productions, established by Yash Johar in 1979, is a prominent Indian film production company. It has produced numerous successful films across various genres, including romance, drama, and family entertainment. Following Yash Johar's demise in 2003, his son Karan Johar has led the company since then along with his friend Apoorva Mehta who is the CEO.
Dharma Productions has created some of the most iconic and memorable films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name Is Khan, and Student of the Year.
