Is Gladiator 3 in the works? Here's what director Ridley Scott has revealed

Still of Paul Mescal from Gladiator II

Seems like Gladiator fans will not have to wait long for the third part of the cult movie. After a wait of 24 long years, Ridley Scott's Gladiator II is ready to hit the theatres this year.

As the makers are gearing up for the release of the sequel, the director has revealed that he's thinking of making the third part of the movie. This is indeed thrilling newsfor all the die-hard fans of the movie.

When asked about his next project after Gladiator II, the 86-year-old filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter (THR), “I’d rather get on into Gladiator III'' before adding, “There’s already an idea.”

Ridley further added that his inspiration for the third part came from The Godfather Part II.

Before THR, the director talked about Gladiator III during his interview with France’s Premiere magazine.

Explaining how the ending of The Godfather II has ignited his interest in making a third film, he said, “I’m already toying with the idea of Gladiator 3. No, seriously! I’ve lit the fuse.”

He added, “The ending of Gladiator II is reminiscent of The Godfather, with Michael Corleone finding himself with a job he didn’t want, and wondering, ‘Now, Father, what do I do?’ So the next [film] will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is.”

Set to release on November 22, Gladiator II is one of the most anticipated films of this year. The forthcoming film will focus on grown-up Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Commodus, the original film’s antagonist played by Joaquin Phoenix.

Apart from Mescal, the movie stars Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Nielsen, and Denzel Washington.

The official synopsis for the movie reads, "Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people."
