The speculation was started by the actor Idris Elba, who tweeted Sunday that "my name’s Elba, Idris Elba."
He followed that up five hours later with "Don’t believe the HYPE..." but social media was abuzz by then.
Elba's tweet was shared over 18,000 times and the replies had poured in.
"You need to watch a few others to understand just HOW BADLY @idriselba is needed in the role!" replied one Twitter user. Her message was followed by a number of heart signs.
"I think Idris is the next logical choice to continue the legacy of the character going forward. His natural onscreen confidence is just utterly compelling, and will add so much gravitas to the franchise. Plus, He looks ***king stunning in a Tux'," said another. There were more heart signs.
The current Bond, Daniel Craig, has played the role four times. In Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre, and will be returning as Bond, James Bond in Bond 25
But there has been speculation, as there usually is, over who will replace him.
Elba is best known for the BBC One series Luther — Barack Obama used to watch that one — and for playing Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
