Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is facing a new legal battle after writer and entertainment journalist Lauren J. Salkin filed a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging that elements of the hit series were taken from a television project she had previously submitted to Sheridan’s production company, as per Page Six report.
According to the lawsuit, Salkin submitted a pilot script called Sovereign Nation and additional materials to Sheridan’s production company between 2016 and 2017. She says she received an acknowledgement from Elevate Entertainment indicating that the material had reached the company.
The lawsuit names Sheridan, Paramount and NBCUniversal as defendants. Salkin is seeking an injunction aimed at preventing what she describes as continuing or future copyright infringement. She is also seeking unspecified financial damages, including profits connected to the successful Yellowstone franchise.
The legal complaint comes after Yellowstone became one of television's biggest franchises. The original series ran for five seasons and concluded in 2024, while its success led to multiple spinoffs and prequels, including 1883 and 1923.
The Yellowstone franchise is a modern Western drama saga created by Taylor Sheridan. It chronicles the multi-generational history of the Dutton family, who own and operate the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch—the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. The stories focus on land preservation, family legacy, and violent conflicts with bordering Native American reservations and developers.
The key theme of the show is the relentless battle to protect ancestral land from corporate expansion, government oversight, and tourism. Extreme measures, moral compromise and unyielding loyalty required to keep the family empire intact. The collision between old-school cowboy traditions and the realities of modern politics and commerce.
