The Venice Film Festival lit up last night as Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s film The Room Next Door received a 17-minute-long standing ovation. Movie watchers were mighty impressed with the film starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore in leading roles.
The Room Next Door had its world premiere on September 2 at the Venice Film Festival.
After the film screening concluded, the cast and director got up from their seats and festival attendees couldn’t stop applauding the film. Pedro kissed the hands of both his leading ladies as the audience lauded the film.
Ecstatic with the response, the filmmaker looked visibly happy. He was dressed in a pink suit and was seen signing autographs.

While other films have got standing ovations at the festival, this was possibly the longest for any in a long time. The festival attendees went on for 17 minutes and the claps began to fade only as Pedro, Tilda, and Julianne finally made their way to the stage. Julianne looked radiant in a golden gown while Tilda wore an off-white attire.
The Room Next Door got a thunderous 17-minute-long standing ovation, longest for any film this edition. It was higher than that of Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody. It got 12 minutes of applause. Then, Pablo Larrain's period drama Maria starring Angelina Jolie got 8 minutes of applause.

The Room Next Door is playing in competition at the 81st edition alongside the likes of Maria, and the yet-to-premiere Queer and Joker: Folie à Deux. Winners will be announced on September 7.
Before The Room Next Door, Pedro made his last Venice Film Festival appearance in 2021 where he presented the film Parallel Mothers. Actress Penelope Cruz won best actress prize for that film. Pedro won a lifetime achievement award in 2019.
The Room Next Door marks the Academy Award-winning filmmaker's English language debut. In the movie, Julianne and Tilda play disconnected friends, who met in their youthat a magazine job, and whose lives took different paths. Ingrid (Julianne) wrote novels, whileMartha (Tilda) became a war reporter. And now after years apart, they meet again, in New York, when Ingrid finds out Martha has cancer and is in a nearby hospital. The Room Next Door will release in theatres in December.
