But who is the man behind the menace? Born and brought up in Chandigarh, Ramandeep’s path to the screen was far from predictable. He got his major break in Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan, followed by roles in Campus Diaries, TVF’s College Romance Season 3, Netflix's CAT alongside Randeep Hooda, and now with Raakh, he has built his own fanbase.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><i>WION </i>caught up with the rising star to talk about landing the role of Rajjo, the gruelling audition process, psychological preparation, and working alongside Sonali Bendre and Ali Fazal.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: What was your first reaction when you read the character?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> When I was approached for the role, I was told to increase my weight. I said, "Okay, I'll try as much as I can and won't cut it down." Then I came for the audition. When I reached there, I saw around 14 other people auditioning with me. I thought, "Wow, this is going to take a while."</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Then they told me, "You will play Rajjo, and the rest of the people will play Babu." There were around 14 different actors testing for Babu, while I was the only one testing for Rajjo.</p><p>I went for the audition at 10 in the morning and returned home at 10 at night. We tested every actor. A lot of physical fighting was involved.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It was physically exhausting because I had to perform the same fight sequence repeatedly with different actors. Mentally, it was draining too because Rajjo is taking a stand against Babu for the first time in that moment. I would just ask, "Which number is this?" Someone would say, "Seventh." Then I'd think, "Okay, seven more to go."</p><p>The casting team told me I could take a break, but I didn't want to. Every actor deserved the same energy from me. I didn't want anyone to later feel that their co-actor was tired during their test. It was a great experience, and I'm very grateful for it as an actor.</p><p><br><strong>WION: How did you prepare for Rajjo, both mentally and physically?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> Physically, we got clarity during the audition itself that there would be a lot of fighting in the show. Mentally, Rajjo was a very interesting character because he isn't a criminal from the beginning, in the way Babu is. Rajjo represents the psychology of how someone gradually becomes a criminal.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His background is very important. He comes from Haryana, from Sonipat. He speaks Haryanvi. You see his innocence, but you also see how he is shaped by a male-dominated environment and difficult circumstances.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>We created a detailed backstory for him because whatever Rajjo does in the show is brutal. Before doing those scenes, I had to justify his actions from Rajjo's point of view. It had different references, photographs, and visual cues that reminded me of his journey and survival instincts. For me, Rajjo is always in survival mode. When survival becomes your priority, you can end up doing the worst things.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>At the same time, he wants validation. He comes from a section of society that often goes unnoticed. Babu gives him that validation and makes him feel like he matters. Maybe that's why he stays with him for so long.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But the moment blood is on his hands, things begin to change. By the time we reach the verdict sequence, Rajjo is completely scattered because he has finally had time to process what he has done.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: Was there any particular scene that challenged you the most as an actor?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> Yes. The sequence in the car where Rajjo attacks Sahil for the first time after Babu tells him to do it.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>That day, I was in a very intense zone. The producers had created a playlist for the show, and I had also made my own playlist with Haryanvi raginis to help me stay in character.</p><p>Honestly, after performing that scene, I felt as if I had killed someone, and that too a child. For half a day, I couldn't come out of that feeling. Even today, when I talk about it, I get goosebumps because it felt very wrong.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Another difficult scene was when Rajjo goes to dispose of Sahil's body. The audience sees the brutality, but as an actor, I was focused on what was happening inside Rajjo. The audience keeps hoping that he won't cross that line. When he finally does, it becomes even more disturbing. What fascinated me was understanding how someone like Rajjo becomes a criminal. He has never experienced that feeling of power or masculinity before. When he gets that validation, it changes something inside him.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There are also subtle details in the character. For example, the way he looks at Bindiya (Rajjo's niece). Is it admiration? Is it an attraction? Is it desire? I deliberately wanted those emotions to remain unclear.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>As actors, we build an internal graph for our characters. The audience may or may not notice every detail, but I need that clarity for myself while performing.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: You shared the screen with big industry icons like Sonali Bendre and Ali Fazal. What was your experience working alongside them?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav: </strong>Honestly, it still feels like an absolute dream. My sister and I grew up as massive Bollywood fans watching movies on television, so sharing a set with Sonali ma'am was surreal. I remember when Ali sir first broke out in Mirzapur, I binged the entire show and literally woke up with a fever the next day out of sheer excitement! Meeting them for the first time, I was visibly shivering.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>They are incredibly humble human beings. <p><strong>WION: Is there a type of role that you're eager to explore in the future?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> I'd love to play a character who experiences love. I've played someone as wild and intense as Rajjo, but I would love to explore innocence and purity through a character. It's not that I won't do intense roles anymore, but I would definitely love to show that softer side if I get the opportunity.</p><h3>Rapid Fire</h3><p><strong>WION: One word to describe Rajjo?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> Cockroach.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: Which character from Indian cinema do you wish you had played?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> That's an intense question. There are many. I would love to play a character like the ones Irrfan Khan sir used to do. Since I come from Uttar Pradesh, I really admire how naturally he portrayed those dialects and rooted characters. Of course, nobody can be Irrfan Khan sir, but if I ever get something along those lines, I would love to do it.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: One actor whose career path inspires you?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav</strong>: I can't choose just one. Shah Rukh Khan sir, Irrfan sir, Manoj Bajpayee sir, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui sir are all huge inspirations for me. Their journeys have been different, but each of them gives hope that it is possible to achieve one's dreams.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: One thing audiences would be surprised to know about Ramandeep Yadav?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Ramandeep Yadav:</strong> He's so cute. That I'm nothing like Rajjo. People message me on Instagram saying, "You're Rajjo." But honestly, there isn't even one percent of Rajjo in me. My sister watched the show and was genuinely angry at the character. She told me, "I started watching because it's my brother's show, but when Rajjo appeared, I kept thinking, who is this person and what is he doing?" She didn't even congratulate me properly because she was so disturbed by the character. For me, that was actually a victory as an actor because it showed how different Rajjo is from who I am in real life.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Over the years, a certain age group gave the film a cult status. While Cocktail wasn’t anything great to write home about, it should be credited for giving great music, by Pritam, and presenting Deepika Padukone in a completely different avatar. Deepika was splendid in the film as the problematic Veronica, who has a heart of gold, even though she puts up an act of nonchalance all the time. In most scenes, Deepika shone more than her co-stars, Saif Ali Khan and debutant Diana Penty. More than a decade later, Adajania is back with a spiritual sequel, Cocktail 2, which also centres around three individuals entangled in love and complications. The original Cocktail was middling in any case, but the sequel makes the original look superior in terms of storytelling.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The first film was written by Imtiaz Ali, who is known to present women as strong individuals, as saviours of problematic men. Cocktail 2 has Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain as writers. Ranjan usually presents women as selfish, controlling and conniving and men as the henpecked, innocent beings. So you can easily understand how Cocktail 2 pans out.</p><h2>What’s the plot of Cocktail 2</h2><p>Diya (Rashmika Mandanna) and Kunal (Shahid Kapoor) have been together for over a decade. Successful and comfortable with each other as live-in partners, they don't want to take the plunge and marry just because society wants a label on their relationship. As the marriage season dons upon Delhi, the two decide to escape questions about their plans to marry and head to Italy for a long vacation. There, they meet Ally(Kriti Sanon), Diya’s old friend from Uni days, who decides to be the third wheel in the relationship and show them around Italy.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ally is a person who gets bored easily, we are told. She is also constantly dressed for the beach and is very self-aware of her hotness. At one point, she admits that no man can ever resist her advances. That makes her friend, the mildly suspicious and very controlling Diya, hatch a plan to test her man and his loyalty for her. She asks Ally to seduce him to check his response. Ally mentions that the plan is risky, but Diya insists on it. What follows is a bizarre, long-drawn process of the two women pushing the man to the brink, just to test his loyalty to his longtime partner.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Things obviously get complicated as love happens by chance amid all the flirting and seducing, but relationships and friendships get complicated.</p>

<h2>What works</h2><p>Shot in parts of Italy, Cocktail 2 is visually stunning. Shot by cinematographer Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran, who, with his frames, sets the vibe of Italian summer well. A large part of the film has Kunal and Ally soaking in the sun on the beach, conversing and getting to know each other. Sicily comes alive in each frame where the story is set in the first half. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, the film has the leads looking stunning, especially Kriti Sanon.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Much like the first film, Cocktail 2 is beutiful songs by Pritam, including a love ballad by Arijit Singh.</p><h2>What does not work</h2><p>The plot is wafer-thin and stretched over 150 minutes. It some point, one gets impatient at their trio’s first-world problems of infertility and relationship issues. The film labels the women, like most Luv Ranjan-written films do. The bohemian, hot girl falls for the man while seducing him just for fun. So much so that she is ready to break his marriage. The girlfriend is bossy and controlling everything, and constantly doubting her man, even though he hasn’t given her any reasons to feel that way. The man is shown to be henpecked, behaving like a doormat to his girlfriend. From the first glimpse of the three characters, you know their character traits.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Among the actors, Kriti Sanon gets the maximum scope to perform. It's not a very well-written script in any case, but Sanon delivers her flawed character of Ally in most parts of the film. The other parts, she is busy imitating Deepika from the original film. Rashmika’s strong accent gets in the way of her delivering a solid performance. Among the three leads, Shahid Kapoor is perhaps the most talented and seasoned. But the makers hardly make him perform to his best. In the greater part of the film, Shahid is shown to be a quiet observer who silently obeys his lady love. When you have an actor of Shahid’s calibre in the film, why waste him playing someone so quiet?</p>

<h2>Final Verdict</h2><p>Cocktail 2 aims to cater to the younger generation. Perhaps the problems and complexities shown in the film are more identifiable to the young audience. Unfortunately, the writer of this review does not belong to that age group. While the film attempts to highlight modern dar friendships and relationships, in times of social media, it fails to connect with a very poorly written story. The actors are all good, perform to their parts and look stunning on screen, but that doesn't alleviate a very mediocre film.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>When the first teaser of Cocktail 2 had come out, there were rumours that the story would have Rashmika cheating on Shahid with Kriti. In the recent years, two filmmakers- Prosit Roy and Vikramaditya Motwane brought a case on OTT. The series goes back in time to establish Babu as a problematic man who spares no one, family, friends, girlfriend and even strangers. Rajjo’s background, on the other hand, is slightly sketchy, but it is revealed that he has been driven to commit petty crimes due to poverty.&nbsp;</p>

Based on the memoirs of jailer Sunil Gupta, it treats the case not as a current, unfolding horror, but concentrates on the aftermath of the verdict. </p>

<p>The series is from the perspective of rookie jailor Sunil Gupta (Zahaan Kapoor), who has to oversee the execution of Ranga and Billa and prove his worth to sceptical seniors. For him, Ranga and Billa are not just headlines or monsters fleeing a crime scene—they are heavily guarded inmates waiting for the gallows. It explores the unsettling domesticity of death row. As Gupta makes his way to meet Ranga and Billa (always shown in shadows), he is constantly told by the two that they did not commit the crime, but the other one did. They offer two radically different vantage points—one focusing on the anatomy of the crime, the immediate trauma, and the systemic procedural, while the other looks at the post-verdict aftermath through the unique lens of institutional captivity.</p><p> </p><p>What’s common between Raakh and Black Warrant is that the two shows define an era which is now unthinkable. A time when Delhi was a safe city where children were allowed to travel alone in the evenings. It wasn’t unthinkable to ask for lifts from strangers. A time when social media activism was missing, and there was no rush to get breaking news out first. Journalists sought permission before interviewing criminals and did not shove a mic in their faces while they were being moved to courts. Raakh functions as an elegy for a city's lost safety and a family’s stolen future, while Black Warrant serves as a cynical, sharp dissection of how the state apparatus responds when its capital city is shaken to its core.</p></p>

The series gets into the anatomy of the crime. The atmospheric drama begins with an outside view of the incident and then moves inwards to delve deeper into the minds of those involved in the crime. Babu, at one point, is described as ‘daitya’ (demon) for committing a heinous crime; his aide Rajjo is shown as a man who has committed a petty crime and is always a reluctant accomplice to Babu’s crime. The two thieves and then murderers, later, have been committing a spate of crimes before they offer a lift to the two kids in an attempt to kidnap them and extort money from the parents. <p>“The man who was excited to watch an Indian spy exact revenge on Pakistan, and who, toward the very end of the movie, says, ‘Mein Vaapas Aaunga,' was disappointed that the movie had nothing to do with terrorists and spies. Though touched by the heartfelt drama, he was confused about how Pakistan can neither have terrorists nor spies, given that's all they seem to have in other movies. <p>Rajkumar Hirani, who is currently gearing up for the release of <i>Pritam and Pedro,</i> has recently opened up about one of the most-talked-about decisions in his 2014 blockbuster <i>PK</i>. The filmmaker has revealed that keeping an alien as the lead character was an important aspect of the film, and not just because of a fascination with science fiction.</p><h2>Why PK featured an alien</h2><p>During a conversation with Variety India, Hirani revealed that his approach to depicting an extraterrestrial character was entirely different from that of filmmaker Steven Spielberg. "My reason will be surely completely different to Mr. Spielberg’s reason to use them in his films," he said. "My reason to use one in ‘PK’ was purely that if there’s an alien who lands on earth, he would know nothing about the way we see God. Through his innocence, we’ll be able to tell a story about God in religions.
