Alec Baldwin's manslaughter trial dismissed by judge over withheld evidence

A New Mexico judge dismissed Alec Baldwin's trial for involuntary manslaughter on Friday (Jul 12) after ruling that the state had withheld key evidence over the fatal shooting on the set of Rust. According to the judgement, the evidence could have shed light on how live rounds got onto the set, which tragically resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said that the bullets potentially linked to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins that could have been favourable to Baldwin's case had not been shared with his lawyers by police and prosecutors. "There is no way for the court to right this wrong," the judge said.

Baldwin's lawyer Luke Nikas said that the state's failure to disclose the ammunition posed a major legal problem since the state must turn over key evidence to the defence. “They buried it,” Luke Nikas said. “They put it under a different case with a different number.”
If Baldwin would have been found guilty in the involuntary manslaughter lawsuit, he would have faced up to 18 months in prison.

Brian J. Panish, a lawyer for Hutchins, said in a statement on Friday, "We respect the court’s decision. We look forward to presenting all the evidence to a jury and holding Alec Baldwin accountable for his actions in the senseless death of Halyna Hutchins."
Baldwin did several hit films in the late 1980s and early 90s and became a household name. He even has three Emmy awards in his kitty and an Oscar nomination.
