England's Shoaib Bashir scripts unwanted history by conceding 38 runs in an over during County Championship

England’s Shoaib Bashir had an eventful day in England’s County Championship on Monday (June 24) as he conceded a record-equaling 38 runs in an over to script unwanted history. Playing for Worcestershire against Surrey, Bashir was on the receiving end of a batting masterclass from Dan Lawrence. The 38-run over is the joint-worstover in terms of runs conceded by a bowler as Bashir goes down in the record books for all the wrong reasons.

Batting on Day 2 of the County Championship Division 1 match, Lawrence in the 128th over of Surrey’s innings exploded with his bat to score 38 runs. Bashir, on loan from Somerset, amassed five consecutive sixes before he bowled a wide which went for four byes resulting in 35 runs in five legal balls before the sixth ball was chipped for a double which again was a no-ball. The unforgettable spell was the last thing Bashir wanted, having struggled for game time in recent months.

He has been no stranger to attention having been in the pick of the things during England’s tour of India in January. He was unable to travel to India for the first Test match in Hyderabad due to visa issues and was left stranded in Dubai before returning home. He later got his visa to participate in the Test series where he made his debut against India.

Bashir also had a funny moment during the series when he played in the fifth Test against India. The spinner was involved in a hilarious incident during Day 3 of the fifth Test. During the 46th over of England's second innings, Ravindra Jadeja found some turn and clipped Bashir's off-stump. Assuming that he had been caught behind the stumps by Dhruv Jurel, Bashir decided to take the DRS as he didn't realise that he had been bowled.

Bashir's hilarious gesture caught the attention of the fans whocriticised him for his fiery send-offs during the match. Non-striker Joe Root also saw the funny side of the dismissal while Graeme Swann in the commentary box also couldn’t help but laugh after Bashir asked for a DRS.
