Sanju Samson eyes India Test cap after 'encouraging message from leadership'

India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is eying Test cap for India after his record-breaking 40-ball ton in the third T20I against Bangladesh. Samson has been on the fringes of Indian team but has never been able to fully live up to his talent.
The ton against Bangladesh coupled with a message from the management, however, seems to have filled him with confidence.

“I believe I have the skill set to succeed in red-ball cricket and I just don’t want to restrict myself to white-ball cricket. My desire is to play Test cricket for India. Before the Duleep Trophy, the leadership group had told me they were considering me for red-ball cricket and asked to take it seriously and play more Ranji Trophy matches,” Samson told reporters on Tuesday (Oct 15).
Most recently, Samson also featured in the Duleep Trophy for India D and even scored a hundred.
“My preparation was good this time around. After the series against Sri Lanka, I trained at the RR (Rajasthan Royals) Academy with Rahul Dravid sir and Zubin Bharucha and worked on my game. The century in the Duleep Trophy has given me a lot of confidence as it came against some of the best bowlers in the country,” he added.

Samson has played 64 first-class matches and has scored 3,819 runs at an average of 39. He has also hit 11 hundreds and 21 fifties with a highest score of 211.
He is currently in the Kerala squad for their next Ranji Trophy fixture against Karnataka which starts Friday (Oct 18) in Bengaluru.
Samson, however, isn't part of India's squad in the ongoing three-Test home series against New Zealand and is unlikely to travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar series next month.
