Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin sounded unhappy with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s demotion to number three in the recently concluded second T20I in Christchurch. Usually an opener, the teen batting prodigy returned to the T20I side as an injury replacement for Ishan Kishan, and looked like a pale shadow of himself. The arrival of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and his form since winning the orange cap in IPL 2026 for most runs scored (776 runs) has put Sanju Samson's place as an India opener under constant pressure. However, Romario Shepherd dismissed Varma at a crucial moment, shifting the momentum towards the visitors. “The turning point of the match was when Tilak got out. We were cruising, scoring those 10-12 runs per over really nicely. Reddy and Tilak were batting really well in the pressure situation. Till that moment, I think we were in the chase. That is actually a great thing to have after losing five wickets, having that kind of control – two young cricketers taking on the pressure and taking on the West Indian bowling line-up,” Samson told reporters after the match. Also Read - Vinicius Jr handed four-game suspension, set to miss season’s first El Clasico Samson also made an impact with the bat, scoring a quickfire 56 off just 23 balls to give India a strong start in the chase. However, he admitted that the defeat had left him disappointed despite enjoying his time at the crease. The wicketkeeper-batter said chasing such a big total required him to trust his instincts and use his power-hitting ability. He added that the innings would have felt even better had India won the match. “Whatever you do feels very different when you are on the losing side, so I am actually a bit gutted at the moment. I definitely wanted to be on the winning side. I really enjoyed batting out there. When you are chasing a score like that, there are no second thoughts - you just have to back your instincts, your power game, and that is what I did. So I really enjoyed the knock, but I would have liked to be on the winning side,” he added. With this win, the West Indies levelled the five-match series 2-2. The two sides will now face each other in the series decider at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday (Oct 17). With inputs from agencies

Sanju Samson pinpointed Tilak Varma’s dismissal by Romario Shepherd as the turning point in India’s unsuccessful chase of 248 in Hyderabad.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about the emotional challenge of leaving Sanju Samson out of the playing XI during the T20I series in England, revealing that the decision kept him awake at night. Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament during India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year, was dropped after the opening match of the five-game series in England in July. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his opportunity to get in the playing XI. Gambhir's comments came after India won the third and final T20I against Afghanistan on Thursday (Sep 17) to complete the 3-0 whitewash. There was speculation that Sooryavanshi, 15, might play ahead of Sanju Samson in the final T20I, but Gambhir stayed with the tried and tested opening pair of Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Sanju Samson may have helped India defend the T20 World Cup in March, but the batter has been under constant scrutiny for his form since then. His lack of runs in IPL 2026 and in subsequent T20I matches coincided with the rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 for scoring the most runs (776). I try to shut out the noise and be confident. I come out and still keep scoring at a high strike rate — even taking chances, knowing that if I fail again, I’ll be facing a lot of noise again. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) rocked Mumbai Indians (MI) in a one-sided contest at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday (April 23) with Sanju Samson and Akeal Hosein starring for the visitors. Samson scored an unbeaten 101 while Hosein scalped four wickets to help CSK beat MI by 103 runs and give a massive boost to the net run rate (NRR). CSK win big at Wankhede Chasing 208, Mumbai lost three wickets, including South African Quinton de Kock for seven, in the first three overs, slipping to 11/3. Impact substitute Hosein, a left-arm spinner, took two of the three. Suryakumar Yadav, who made 35, and Tilak Varma attempted to rebuild with a partnership of 73, but the asking rate kept rising amid tidy bowling by Chennai. The wily Hosein returned to break the stand as he got Varma to drag a delivery onto his stumps and out for 37. Wickets kept tumbling as Noor Ahmad struck on successive balls to send back Pandya, for one, and Sherfane Rutherford for a duck, before Shardul Thakur avoided the hat-trick. Hosein dismissed Suryakumar for his fourth and, with that, the batting fizzled out. IND vs NZ, T20 World Cup final: Abhishek-Sanju give India perfect start with 92 runs in powerplay

India and New Zealand will be facing off each other in the T20 World Cup 2026 Final on Sunday (Mar 8) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The two teams had also met in the last ICC white-ball tournament final, Champions Trophy 2025, and India had emerged victorious. In T20 WCs though, India have never beaten New Zealand. Also, the venue does not have great memories for the Indian fans when it comes to the ICC white-ball tournament finals - remember 2023 ODI World Cup final? Both the side, however, have a lot of match winners who can turn the game on their own and whichever team handles pressure well, will going to be crowned the champions.<h2>IND vs NZ, T20 World Cup 2026 Final - Players to watch out for</h2>Both, India and New Zealand have been scrappy in the tournament so far. The Kiwis, however, played a near-perfect game in the semis against South Africa while India escaped England's fightback by just seven runs. None of the previous matches will matter though, but the final brings the added pressure and below are the players who can win the match for their team:Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ind-vs-nz-t20-wc-2026-final-india-skipper-suryakumar-reveals-if-varun-chakaravarthy-will-play-or-not-1772895102001">IND vs NZ, T20 WC Final | India skipper SKY reveals if Varun will play or not</a>Sanju Samson (India): The Indian wicketkeeper-batter has played the innings of his life in the last two matches, taking India to the final almost single-handedly. With his partner Abhishek Sharma out of form, Samson would be the key for India at the top order and he gets going, India will definitely have better chances to winning the match.Finn Allen (New Zealand) - Everyone was focused on Tim Seifert at the top order but then came a 33-ball ton in the semis. Allen's innings against South Africa in the previous match has made him the talk of the town and New Zealand will be hoping for similar fireworks in the final against India as well.Varun Chakaravarthy (India) - He may be out of form but still remains the number 1 T10I bowler in the ICC rankings. The mystery spinner has been crucial to India ever since T20 World Cup 2024 and one bad day isn't going to make him any less of a trump player. His bowling in the middle overs will definitely impact India's chances to win the final.Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand) - He's mainly a batter but his 11 wickets with left-arm spin has ensured that Ravindra is counted as an ace player while bowling as well. Ravindra's bowling could prove effective against a sort-of patchy Indian middle order and the spinner can take a couple of wickets, he'll certainly boost his team's chances to win the trophy.Jasprit Bumrah (India) - The cheat code bowler India have in their ranks. Bumrah's four overs are going to as crucial as anything in the match and he'll certainly be a deciding factor in India defending the title or not.Matt Henry (New Zealand) - The pacer hasn't been effective so far in the tournament but can very much call the match in the powerplay itself. With the India top and middle order a big scratchy, Henry will definitely will be hoping to make inroads early on and help his team.

Also, the venue does not have great memories for the Indian fans when it comes to the ICC white-ball tournament finals - remember 2023 ODI World Cup final? Both the side, however, have a lot of match winners who can turn the game on their own and whichever team handles pressure well, will going to be crowned the champions. IND vs NZ, T20 World Cup 2026 Final - Players to watch out for Both, India and New Zealand have been scrappy in the tournament so far. The Kiwis, however, played a near-perfect game in the semis against South Africa while India escaped England's fightback by just seven runs. None of the previous matches will matter though, but the final brings the added pressure and below are the players who can win the match for their team: Also Read - IND vs NZ, T20 WC Final | India skipper SKY reveals if Varun will play or not Sanju Samson (India): The Indian wicketkeeper-batter has played the innings of his life in the last two matches, taking India to the final almost single-handedly. With his partner Abhishek Sharma out of form, Samson would be the key for India at the top order and he gets going, India will definitely have better chances to winning the match. Finn Allen (New Zealand) - Everyone was focused on Tim Seifert at the top order but then came a 33-ball ton in the semis. Allen's innings against South Africa in the previous match has made him the talk of the town and New Zealand will be hoping for similar fireworks in the final against India as well. Varun Chakaravarthy (India) - He may be out of form but still remains the number 1 T10I bowler in the ICC rankings. The mystery spinner has been crucial to India ever since T20 World Cup 2024 and one bad day isn't going to make him any less of a trump player. His bowling in the middle overs will definitely impact India's chances to win the final. Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand) - He's mainly a batter but his 11 wickets with left-arm spin has ensured that Ravindra is counted as an ace player while bowling as well. Ravindra's bowling could prove effective against a sort-of patchy Indian middle order and the spinner can take a couple of wickets, he'll certainly boost his team's chances to win the trophy. Jasprit Bumrah (India) - The cheat code bowler India have in their ranks. Bumrah's four overs are going to as crucial as anything in the match and he'll certainly be a deciding factor in India defending the title or not. Matt Henry (New Zealand) - The pacer hasn't been effective so far in the tournament but can very much call the match in the powerplay itself. With the India top and middle order a big scratchy, Henry will definitely will be hoping to make inroads early on and help his team.

Both, India and New Zealand have been scrappy in the tournament so far. The Kiwis, however, played a near-perfect game in the semis against SA while India escaped England's fightback by just seven runs. Both the side, however, have a lot of match winners who can turn the game on their own.
