The T20 World Cup 2026 final is all set to take centre stage on Sunday (Mar 8) as India and New Zealand meet at the Narendra Modi Stadium. In what will be a major final, India could script history as they could become the first nation to win back-to-back T20 World Cups, while New Zealand can add their first major men’s senior accolade. So ahead of the huge final, here are all the details, including where and how to watch and other key details.
What can we look forward to?
India will be heavily relying on their batting order with Sanju Samson in great form after scoring back-to-back fifties. He will be given a good helping hand by Abhishek Sharma as he looks to find form in the summit clash. Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and others will be looking to add fulcrum to the middle order. India’s biggest concern, however, will be the bowling options as Varun Chakaravarthy remains off form. While he is touted to be replaced in the final, Kuldeep Yadav remains in the line-up. We expect Varun to retain his place. India are not expecting any more changes in the rest of the Playing XI. New Zealand are also expected to go with an unchanged Playing XI as they look to rely on the services of Finn Allen and Tim Siefert at the top. Captain Mitchell Santner will be adding width to the attack with the ball and then with the bat. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson should be good enough to go with the new ball as Ahmedabad will offer the required swing. Where to watch: The India vs New Zealand T20 World Cup 2026 final match will be shown live on the Star Sports Network in India. T20 World Cup 2026 | 'Kept on doubting myself:' Sanju Samson reacts after giving Indian fans another memorable 97 in a World Cup

Sanju Samson, remember the name! The batting dynamite did a tremendous job with the bat in hand to see his team home against West Indies in their last Super 8 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sanju smashed an unbeaten 97 to help India beat West Indies by six wickets and qualify for the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026. Samson, who wasn’t the first pick in the XI when this tournament began, marched into the XI from the Zimbabwe game onwards, and he delivered massively to complete a famous win for the hosts. Chasing a mammoth 196, India lost two wickets inside the Powerplay, including the in-form Ishan Kishan on just 10. Captain Suryakumar Yadav played a handy role with Samson in the middle, but departed on a 16-ball 18 inside the 11th over. With pressure back on India, as the required rate was swelling over 10 runs per over, Samson and Tilak Varma stitched a match-winning 42-run partnership for the fourth wicket, putting India in the driver’s seat. Following Tilak’s departure, Hardik Pandya joined the party and smashed 17 off 14 balls, including two fours, with Samson silently doing his job at the other end. By the time Pandya departed in the penultimate over, India had almost sealed the chase. While Shivam Dube’s two fantastic fours pulled India closer to the win, Samson’s six and a four on the first two balls of the last over sealed India’s fate. Not only did he register the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup run chase, surpassing the great chaser himself, Virat Kohli, Sanju’s unbeaten 97 also saw India complete its highest successful chase in T20 WC history. India finished second in Group 1 and will face the top-ranked team from Group 2, which is England, in the second semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 5. Until then, check out how the social media reacted to Sanju’s powerful knock and India’s famous win at the Eden -

T20 World Cup 2026: Sanju Samson back for Zimbabwe clash? Here's what batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said

Team India has begun its survival drill in Chennai ahead of a crucial do-or-die game against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup Super 8 tie. Sitting on the brink of a shock elimination since losing to South Africa in Ahmedabad by 76 runs, Team India must iron out their issues, including Abhishek Sharma’s form and sort their playing XI. While opener Abhishek turned into a leg-spinner in Chennai nets on Tuesday evening, Samson hogged the limelight as Rinku Singh’s potential replacement for the next game. The latest reports suggest that Rinku left the Indian camp to be with his ailing father, and is unlikely to return in time for the Zimbabwe fixture on Thursday (Feb 26). Considering he remains absent, India has a backup option in Samson, who batted alongside Ishan Kishan in Tuesday's training, honing his skills against the turning ball. While he is likely to walk into the playing XI, opening with Abhishek, with Ishan coming in at number three, India could make another change by bringing in Axar Patel for Washington Sundar.

A Times of India (TOI) report also stated that despite being bowled out by India’s frontline spinners several times, he never stopped hitting them big at the Chepauk stands. With India asking Chennai curators to prepare a surface to their liking, more batting-friendly, with a hint of assistance for spinners, SKY’s changed higher approach could reap rewards.
Abhishek turns leggie before finding form
Since peaking in the T20I bilateral series before the competition, Abhishek’s shock slump has made headlines. As the nets were folding up, Abhishek batted for nearly half an hour and even connected, showing glimpses of returning to form at the right time. As a few of his shots landed beyond the boundary rope, the onlookers seemed convinced that Abhishek was closing in on finding his breakthrough moment in this tournament.

Ishan Kishan, after his 20-ball 53 in the T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match against South Africa on Wednesday (Feb 4), is the front-runner to open the batting ahead of Sanju Samson come main tournament. Former India skipper Kris Srikkanth has an advice for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson as India gear up for defence of T20 World Cup title early next year. Samson was picked ahead of vice-captain Shubman Gill who has been dropped from the squad altogether. Samson had played in the last T20I of five-match series against South Africa at home and scored a quickfire 37 before getting out. Srikkanth says that Samson has to convert those starts to make sure he isn't dropped from the playing XI anymore.
Srikkanth's advice for Samson
“He batted really well. What an innings it was. Some of the strokes he played were brilliant. When he is striking, he is striking deadly. Only thing I will tell Sanju is, don’t get out on 37. Convert that 37 into 73. If you do that, you can’t be removed. People forget 30s and 40s,” remarked Srikkanth, as reported by the Indian Express, after India's win against South Africa in Ahmedabad. Also Read - Next to Imran Khan! I think they might have told him [Gill] yesterday that you don’t play. Maybe that’s why he was declared unfit. They might have told him that he’s not in the team.”
Why was Gill dropped?
Earlier this year, Gill was named India's Test and ODI skipper as well as being named Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in the T20Is as well. He played 15 matches since the appointment, replacing Samson as Abhishek Sharma's opening partner but returned modest numbers - scoring only one half-century in 15 innings. While he was clearly out of form, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar insisted that it is team combination because of which Gill has been dropped as the management wanted a keeper to open. India have also handed a call back to Ishan Kishan in the T20I squad after his stunning campaign in domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) for Jharkhand.

Samson was picked ahead of vice-captain Shubman Gill who has been dropped from India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad altogether. Samson had played in the last T20I of five-match series against South Africa at home and scored a quickfire 37 before getting out.

Srikkanth's advice for Samson “He batted really well.
