IND vs SA: Will Sanju Samson finally open for Team India as hosts take on South Africa in Ahmedabad?

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin commented on Team India’s selection conundrum surrounding the wicketkeeper’s slot ahead of the first T20I against South Africa in Cuttack. With Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma fighting for that one spot in India’s T20I side, with them wanting to lock that place for next year’s T20 World Cup, Ashwin wondered if the leadership group would back the seasoned and proven Samson at number three in the series opener. While Samson was the chosen one since the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, Jitesh took his place during the recently concluded Australia T20Is, holding onto the lower-middle-order spot. “I want to see if India will give Samson a chance at three, or will they go with Suryakumar and Tilak at three and four. They tried to use Sanju here in Australia. The template had to be changed for Gill came in. Sanju was opening and giving that keeping option. Now that the opening batter and keeper have gone, you are having to accommodate a keeper and finisher down the order. I will be looking forward from India’s perspective, if we are giving role clarity to batters,” Ashwin said on ‘Ash ki Baat’. Speaking on this high-octane contest, Ashwin said he is looking forward to watching this series against the potent Proteas, knowing how deep they bat and possess a brilliant T20I squad. IND vs SA: Ravi Ashwin on wicketkeeper's slot in 1st T20I - ‘I want to see if India…’

India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has made it clear that Sanju Samson will have to compete with Jitesh Sharma for a place in the playing XI in the upcoming five-match series against South Arica. The first of five T20Is is set to be played on Tuesday (Dec 9) in Cuttack. Samson was promoted up the order as opener in absence of Shubman Gill but once India's Test and ODI skipper returned, Samson was pushed down in the middle order. With 2026 T20 World Cup less than three months away, Samson would be hoping to use any opportunity provided to cement his place.
SKY on Sanju vs Jitesh in South Africa T20Is
"We gave Sanju opportunities. Former Indian mystery spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson opening for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. However, it is Samson who is in the spotlight as Rajasthan Royals owner Manoj Badale revealed that he was emotionally drained and wanted to leave during IPL 2025.

RR owner makes massive revelation
“The first time this year—or in the past year—that Sanju talked about moving on was probably in Kolkata towards the end of the season. We had a meeting after the game. He’s a very honest guy. He was personally and emotionally drained. He cares a huge amount about RR, and I think having our worst season in 18 years took a lot out of him. Having given the best part of 14 years, with a short break, to RR, he felt he needed a new chapter to refresh the end of his IPL journey,” revealed Badale in a video shared by Rajasthan Royals on their YouTube channel. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes With the deadline day for retentions set for Saturday, the swap deal, which also involved Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals, was confirmed in the morning, hours before the window closed. 4 players who could replace Sanju Samson as Rajasthan Royals captain in IPL 2026

With the talks on for Sanju Samson to be traded from Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings for Ravindra Jadeja, the Royals would be left without a captain if the trade goes through. Samson has been associated with the Royals for many years now and has been the captain as well. His departure will definitely open up the skipper's post for which Royals would have to choose a new face. Have a look at who could lead the side if Samson is traded to CSK for Jadeja in return:
Ravindra Jadeja
Jadeja is expected to land with RR if the swap goes though and he's a legit contender for the role of captain. Jadeja has previously captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2022 but left the role midway into the season after the side lost six of first eight matches. Jadeja recently was named vice-captain of the Test side in home series against West Indies. If he comes to RR, the franchise would definitely be tempted to think about him as the captain. Also Read - Novak Djokovic questions 'lack of transparency' in Jannik Sinner doping case
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Another potential candidate for captaincy could be the left-hand opener who has become a mainstay in the Royals batting line-up. He is expected to play all the games for the team and has age on his side if Royals are looking to build a new team in the coming years. The captaincy will also give Jaiswal exposure to leadership which could help him in international cricket as well.
Dhruv Jurel
Jurel's stocks have risen multi-fold in the recent times. The wicketkeeper-batter is going though a purple patch and could be an option to lead the Royals once Samson departs. He will also be donning gloves full-time once Samson leaves which confirms his place in the playing XI.
Riyan Parag
Despite modest performances, Royals have backed Riyan Parag for many seasons. He is an integral part of the Royals batting order and has captaincy experience as well in domestic cricket. Under Parag, his domestic team Assam finished their best in 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy when reached the semis.

Ravindra Jadeja deactivates Instagram account amid CSK-RR IPL trade deal

Former India batter Mohammed Kaif says IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wanting Sanju Samson means MS Dhoni will be playing his last IPL in upcoming season. The statement comes a day after trade talks between CSK and Rajasthan Royals which includes a swap for Sanju Samson from RR to CSK for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. While the deal has not been finalised yet, Kaif thinks CSK roping in Samson would mean that he'll captain the side as he has been doing with RR.
Kaif on CSK-RR trade for Samson-Jadeja
“If Samson is likely to join CSK, there would be a lot of calls. Sanju must have called on the phone. Behind the scenes, there are a lot of phone calls. Sanju might have spoken to CSK, maybe Dhoni, ‘Bhai kya lagta hai (How does it seem).’ See, Dhoni runs the team, and if CSK wants Sanju this time, then he is also the future captain. It also means that this is Dhoni’s last year. Why would they want Sanju? Jadeja has been playing for them for a long time (since 2012),” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
What is the trade all about?
After the IPL 2025 season, there were reports that Samson is looking out from the Royals. Now, according to Cricbuzz, both the franchises, CSK and RR are actively looking at the trade involving Samson and Jadeja. Both the players are one of the core members of their respective teams and have been involved with them for many years counting. If happens, this trade is going to be one of the biggest in the league history. The previous high-profile trade in IPL involved Hardik Pandya moving to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans and replacing Rohit Sharma as skipper as well.

What once seemed impossible in IPL circles — a swap between Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson — has now entered serious negotiation stages. According to a Cricbuzz report, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are actively exploring the blockbuster trade, though it’s still short of a finalised agreement. Both players, valued at INR 18 crore each, make the deal financially balanced. However, Cricbuzz notes that RR are reluctant to agree to a straight one-for-one exchange. The Royals reportedly want an additional player included, which has become the key stumbling block in discussions. Sources cited by Cricbuzz also reveal that Rajasthan have approached other teams, such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, while keeping communication channels open with franchises like Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders. The sticking point in the CSK-RR talks appears to be RR’s demand for young South African talent Dewald Brevis. The batter, who joined CSK mid-season last year, has since emerged as one of the most sought-after players in T20 leagues worldwide. India vs UAE, Asia Cup 2025: Samson or Jitesh? Skipper Suryakumar reveals who'll be part of playing XI

With the 2025 Asia Cup just on the brink of getting underway in the UAE, one question that keeps everyone thinking is who opens with Abhishek Sharma, the newly-appointed T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill or keeper-batter or regular opener Sanju Samson? Though Samson held that opener’s slot in the past three series (against Bangladesh, South Africa and England), smashing three top-notch hundreds, Gill’s return to the T20I setup makes him an automatic selection, putting the selectors and the leadership under pressure on whom to choose. India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) as the Men in Blue prepare to defend their title under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian team, which had a couple of surprises, will now take to the field as they try to build a squad for the T20 World Cup which takes place in their own backyard in less than six months' time. So here is a detailed look at who could be in India’s Playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 which starts on September 9 while the World Cup remains a long-term objective.
Gill, Abhishek to open?
It is highly likely that the Punjab duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team’s Playing XI as they both bring tons of experience at the top. With Gill, Samson and Abhishek preferred, it won't be a surprise if Tilak Varma misses out. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya should tick the box for the middle order as they are the backbone of the Playing XI. Varun Chakaravarthy should also make the Playing XI, considering he was effective on UAE pitches and proved his worth during the Champions Trophy 2025. The final spot will be a shootout, as playing conditions will determine the inclusion of an extra spinner or not. Therefore, Samson’s position as the only wicketkeeper-batter cements his place in the Playing XI. He will also act as a backup opener in case Gill or Abhishek are unavailable. With Gill, Samson and Abhishek preferred, it won't be a surprise if Tilak Varma misses out. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya should tick the box for the middle order as they are the backbone of the Playing XI. The No.6 spot will be up for grabs as Shivam Dube could be preferred over Rinku Singh if certain playing conditions are taken into consideration. Varun Chakaravarthy should also make the Playing XI, considering he was effective on UAE pitches and proved his worth during the Champions Trophy 2025. The final spot will be a shootout, as playing conditions will determine the inclusion of an extra spinner or not. If a fast bowling option is considered, Harshit Rana should make the squad, while a spin option should see Kuldeep make the cut. IPL 2026: Sanju Samson breaks silence on his equation with Rajasthan Royals amid transfer request rumours

Sanju Samson's desire to leave Rajasthan Royals surprised most people, and former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra is no different. The latest reports of Sanju seeking an exit from the franchise he earlier led to an IPL final (in 2022) have turned heads around, with almost everyone wondering what went wrong between the two. Although these are more than just speculations that Sanju has cleared his intentions to RR ahead of IPL 2026, Chopra feels the emergence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi at the top has perhaps forced Sanju on his way out of Royals. While Sanju, the captain, was destined to hog all the limelight (in IPL 2025), having missed a few games early on due to injury, with Riyan Parag leading the side in his absence, Vaibhav’s debut brought IPL back to the limelight. IPL 2025-Players pay tribute to Indian armed forces before match

Prior to the match, both players of Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings lined up for the Indian national anthem to pay tribute to the Indian armed forces ahead of their IPL 2025 clash at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, on Sunday (May 18). The RR-PBKS clash is the first proper match to happen after the resumption of the IPL 2025 on Saturday, following a one-week suspension due to the cross-border tensions with Pakistan. The Saturday clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders was washed out due to rain in Bengaluru without a toss, fading away the excitement of the IPL restart. In a tribute to the Indian armed forces, who displayed their impeccable valour to protect the countrymen from the enemy, players sang the national anthem together to honour their valuable contributions before the start of the match. "Thank you armed forces" was the message being displayed on the screens of the stadium when the Indian national anthem was played. During the toss, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer thanked the Indian armed forces for safeguarding the borders of the country amid tensions with Pakistan. "Kudos to the Army forces who have worked for the country and made sure that we're in a comfortable position," he said during the toss after electing to bat first. RCB announce ticket refunds after match against KKR washed out Royal Challengers Bengaluru have announced ticket refunds for their match against Kolkata Knight Riders at M. Chinaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which was abandoned without a ball being bowled, due to persistent rain on Saturday. "Digital ticket holders will be issued a refund within 10 working days to their original account used to book the tickets.
