India chief selector Ajit Agarkar has shared his take on dropping Sanju Samson from the upcoming ODI squad of white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. Samson was most recently part of India's five-match T20I tour of Zimbabwe which the Shubman Gill-led team won 4-1.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday (Jul 22) ahead of Indian team's departure for Sri Lanka, Agarkar explained the reasoning behind dropping the wicketkeeper-batter.

“Every player left out feels hard done. You’ve got to see who’s picked ahead. At this stage, we had the opportunity to send guys to Zimbabwe. Sometimes it’s just the way things go. Tough to stuff all in 15,” Agarkar said in Mumbai.

Samson last played an ODI in December 2023, scoring a brilliant century against South Africa in the series played right after the ODI World Cup 2023.

It is to be noted that the selectors seem to back KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the potential wicketkeepers in the long run including the 2025 Champions Trophy.

As for T20Is, Samson has retained his place with KL Rahul, who didn't play in the 2024 T20 World Cup either, not being able to make the cut.

India's will be playing three ODIs and three T20Is on the tour which starts with the 20-over games from July 27. The 50-over games will be played from August 2 to 7.

'Sometimes it’s just...,' BCCI chief's straightforward reply on dropping Sanju Samson from ODI leg of SL tour

On Thursday evening (July 18), BCCI announced India squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27. There were many big decisions taken as Rohit Sharma, contrary to beliefs, marked himself available to take charge of the ODI side whereas Suryakumar Yadav tipped Hardik Pandya to become the new T20I captain. Even Virat Kohli returned for the ODI leg whereas Shubman Gill was announced the new vice-captain for both squads. However, there were some big omissions as well, with Sanju Samson being out of the ODI line-up.

This has not been well received by former cricketer Dodda Ganesh. The ex-pacer wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "Shivam Dube in place of Sanju Samson in the ODIs is ridiculous. Poor Sanju scored a century in his last series against SA. Why him always? My heart goes out to this young man #SLvIND"

Samson was part of India's last ODI series, held in South Africa. In the three-match series, the right-hander scored 120 runs in three games, including a maiden ton (108) in the series decider -- where India won by 78 runs. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper has 510 runs in 16 ODIs, at an average of 56.66.

Moreover, Shivam Dube -- who was part of Rohit-led India's victorious run in 2024 T20 World Cup -- has been named in the ODI squad. Further, it also sees the return of Shreyas Iyer and addition of Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana. There is no Ravindra Jadeja whereas Hardik is only part of the T20I squad (choosing to be away from the ODI leg for personal reasons).

Talking about the T20I squad, Surya has been named the new captain, pipping former white-ball vice-captain Hardik. However, the squad doesn't include Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad despite their good returns in the Zimbabwe tour.

Shubman Gill-led India beat Zimbabwe by 42 runs in the fifth and final T20I, on Sunday (July 14) at Harare, to clinch the five-match series 4-1. Being asked to bat first, India were struggling at 40 for 3 before Sanju Samson's 45-ball 58 and Shivam Dube's 26 (12) took the visitors to 167 for 6. In reply, Zimbabwe only managed 125 in 18.3 overs courtesy of Mukesh Kumar's 4 for 22. During Samson's vital knock, he smashed a monstrous 110 metre six, which also became the longest maximum of the series. The right-hander, who resurrected the Indian innings after early blows, took on spinner Brandan Mavuta and hit him for twin sixes in the 12th over, the first one going 110 metres.

Samson stitched a valuable 65-run fourth-wicket stand with his Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammate Riyan Parag before adding more runs with Dube. He departed for a well-made 58, laced with a solitary four and 4 sixes. Thus, the wicketkeeper-batter, who was part of Rohit Sharma-led India's victorious run in the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA, joined the Gill-led India in Zimbabwe for the last three games and ended the series on a high.

At the post-match presentation, stand-in captain Gill said, "Excellent series. The hunger that we showed after the first loss was phenomenal to watch. Lot of the players had long flights, they weren't used to the conditions. The way they adapted was remarkable. I have been there (Sri Lanka) once for Asia Cup, looking forward to go there and performing."

India will now shift their focus to the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting on July 27 with Gautam Gambhir set to officially take over as the head coach.

Samson and Co are yet to return to India after winning the T20 World Cup in the early hours of Sunday morning. Hurricane Beryl has hit Barbados after the world cup and the Indian team is stuck there and their return to India is delayed. This means Samson, Dube and Jaiswal are unlikely to be available for selection for Saturday’s opening T20I in Harare.

According to the latest reports, the trio will only return to India on Wednesday evening along with the rest of the squad through a charter flight. It is anticipated that all the players will participate in a road show and will have a dinner with the Prime Minister on Wednesday or Thursday evening. In this case, Samson and Co are unlikely to reach Zimbabwe on time and will face travel fatigue.

India tour of Zimbabwe: Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana added to India’s squad as back-up to Sanju Samson and Co.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh lauded India's unbeaten run in the group stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup, being held in West Indies and the USA. Ahead of the Super 8s, where India play Afghanistan in Barbados on Thursday (June 20), Harbhajan opined that there are a lot of positives for India after the end of the group stage and also tried to reason out why Sanju Samson hasn't been given a chance so far. Samson was being preferred over Rishabh Pant in the playing XI by many former cricketers before the T20 WC due to his IPL 2024 heroics. While Pant also had a good run in this year's IPL, many pitted Samson over Pant due to his effortless striking.

However, Bhajji explained why Samson has not been preferred in the India XI. Harbhajan began by lauding Hardik Pandya's bowling effort as the all-rounder has claimed seven scalps in three games (most by an Indian so far). "The biggest positive is that Hardik Pandya took the wicket. He was the fourth bowler in this tournament. But if you look at his wicket tally, he has done much better than what was expected of him," the veteran told Star Sports.

He then shifted his focus on Samson's ouster and added, "Along with him, Rishabh Pant played at number 3. His role was completely changed. Before this World Cup, we were saying that Sanju Samson will play in the team because he has made big runs. To make Rishabh Pant play at number three is a big positive. Left-Right combination is formed when Rishabh Pant plays at number three."

It will be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma-led India will opt for Samson or not, at the expense of underperfoming Shivam Dube.

Left-Right combination is formed when Rishabh Pant plays at number three." T20 WC: Rishabh Pant at No. 3 led to Sanju Samson's ouster from India's playing XI, opines Harbhajan

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson admits his team fell short of options against spin during the middle overs against SunRisers Hyderabad, which led to their exit from IPL 2024.

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson admits his team fell short of options against spin during the middle overs against SunRisers Hyderabad, which led to their exit from IPL 2024. Samson said SRH made most of the conditions in the second innings by bowling two left-arm spinners in the middle overs, with the ball stopping now and then. Although his team failed to reach the finals this season, Samson feels RR has unearthed a brilliant talent in Riyan Parag, who is now ready for his India debut. "I think we were found short of options in the middle overs against spin, and I think that's where we lost the game," Samson said in the post-match presser. "Against left-arm spin, we had three-four right-handers in the middle and the ball was stopping. But we could've tried a bit more [options] - reverse-sweep or use of the crease a bit more - and they [SRH] also bowled really well, actually,” Samson praised SRH’s Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Ahmed. ALSO READ: IPL 2024 Playoff: SunRisers Hyderabad demolish Rajasthan Royals to book showdown clash with Kolkata With no dew during the game, the SRH successfully defended a par total at Chepauk, where the ball turned and gripped more in the second innings. Per the broadcaster, the average turn in the first innings was 1.8 degrees but increased to 3.3 in the second. For the crucial knockout in Chennai, where spinners often get more purchase of the pitch, SRH dropped two spin mainstays - Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Mayank Markande and instead brought in Shahbaz as the Impact Sub during the first innings. The all-rounder played a handy knock of 18 off 18, hitting one six; he stood tall with the ball in hand, returning with three for 23 in four overs. Alongside Abhishek – a part-timer, both conceded just 47 runs in eight overs, picking five wickets. Parag’s time has come Riyan Parag was a flop show last season, scoring just 78 in seven matches played; however, he turned the tides this year by ending up as the highest run-scorer for his team, amassing 573 runs in 15 games at a strike rate close to 150. Moreover, the captain praised keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel also, who top-scored with 55 against SunRisers Hyderabad. "To be very honest, we've had some brilliant games not only this season, but the last three years have been a great project for our franchise. "We've found some really great talent for the country, I think. Riyan Parag coming out of this season and Dhruv Jurel and a lot of them are looking really exciting, not only for RR but for the Indian cricket team,” Samson said. Meanwhile, Parag and Abhishek are not part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, with the BCCI selectors keen on trying them first in the bilateral series.

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh is reportedly keen on applying for Team India’s head coach position. Harbhajan is the second high-profile Indian player after Gautam Gambhir, willing to replace Rahul Dravid for the top job. Rahul’s tenure ends with the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA. Besides, Harbhajan also picked Sanju Samson over Rishabh Pant in the starting XI for the marquee event. On the day when media reports of BCCI seeking MS Dhoni’s assistance in convincing Stephen Fleming to apply for the soon-to-be-vacant post started doing rounds on the internet, Harbhajan’s interest in replacing Dravid has made this scenario exciting. As reported by the Times of India (TOI), Harbhajan revealed he hasn’t applied yet, but if an opportunity comes by, he will grab it with both hands. Bhajji continued by saying that what cricket offered him and helped him become who he is today, he’d like to give back to the game. ALSO READ: BCCI seeks MS Dhoni’s help in convincing Stephen Fleming for India’s head coach role – Reports "I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much, and if I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy,” Harbhajan said as quoted by TOI. Meanwhile, Dravid had denied reapplying for the head coach position despite BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirming that the doors for him are always open. The newly-appointed head coach will take over the job from July 1 and his tenure will run for three and a half years. Sanju over Pant for Harbhajan Following a stunning season with the bat in hand and behind the wickets, Sanju Samson earned a call-up to the final 15 for the 20-team tournament starting June 2. Although Rishabh Pant was picked as the first-choice keeper, Harbhajan feels with both among the runs in IPL 2024, Sanju should be preferred to start ahead of Pant. "Rishabh Pant played well in the IPL. He has come out of his injuries. He looked fit, batted well and did some nice wicketkeeping. But Sanju played really well. I would like to see him get a chance. He has been performing consistently." "He has been scoring 60s and 70s and is not the old Sanju anymore who would score just 30s and 40s. But there has been no hurry in bringing Pant back, he worked really hard. I hope he does something special for India," Harbhajan said. India is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, co-hosts USA, Canada and Ireland. The Men in Blue will open their campaign against Ireland on June 5, while their marquee clash against Pakistan will take place in New York on June 9.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) slumped to their fourth successive defeat in IPL 2024 when Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat them by five wickets, in pursuit of 145, in match 65 in Guwahati on Wednesday (May 15). After a terrific start, having 8 wins in 9 games, RR have now lost four games on the trot despite confirming their place in the playoffs. With another defeat, their chances of finishing the league stage at the top-two has also gone down considerably.

Following the five-wicket drubbing at the hands of already-eliminated Punjab, RR captain Sanju Samson didn't mince words as he called for the senior players to stand up. Speaking after the match, Samson stated, "To be very honest, we have to sit back and accept that we are going through some failures. You have to find out what's not working well as a team. When you are getting to the business end, we need someone to raise their finger up and say I am going to win the game for the team.

Samson added, "We have the players who can do that. If all of us try that. It's a team sport, but this is the time when we need individual players to step up."

IPL 2024: 'We have to sit back and accept...' - Sanju Samson addresses RR's woeful form before playoffs

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has urged Sanju Samson to show the world his capability with his performances at the 2024 T20 World Cup. For his impressive run with the bat and as a leader this season for Rajasthan Royals, Sanju earned a place in the 15-man squad for the marquee tournament starting June 1.

Although he is the second-choice keeper after Rishabh Pant, Sanju will get some games to prove his credentials in the T20 World Cup. "Now that you've gotten picked in the World Cup team, you have that opportunity-the kind that you need to make sure you start winning games for India if you get the chance. You have that experience of playing international cricket. You are not a newbie that you will wait any longer," Gambhir said in a chat with SportsKeeda. "You have tasted international cricket, and you've done well in the IPL, and now you have the chance to play the World Cup. So, hopefully, Sanju shows the world what he is capable of at this stage. International cricket, that too in a stage like the World Cup, when you flourish, the whole world watches and takes note,” Gambhir continued. RR captaincy to take Sanju forward Leading Rajasthan Royals in the IPL has helped Sanju get better at decision and stroke-making, pushing him to become a mature player. Speaking on the same lines, Gambhir said he never doubted Sanju’s talent; being aware of his abilities, Gautam said Sanju’s leadership (with RR) will help him deliver at the marquee event. ALSO READ: Broad fears England’s ‘inexperienced’ bowling attack could get exposed in Anderson’s absence "Just the quality of a player,” Gambhir said. “I don't need to see much. Five minutes are enough to figure out what kind of a player he is," Gambhir said. "Mentally, you always grow, and skill-wise as well. Otherwise, if you get stagnant, you won't be able to survive for too long. “The good thing is be it fitness, power-hitting, keeping or captaincy... he has not put a foot wrong. Through captaincy, you start accessing, judging better, reading better. That is when you also become a better batter. I hope Samson's captaincy reflects on his batting at the T20 World Cup if he gets a chance,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Rajasthan has struggled lately despite qualifying for playoffs this season. Their fourth straight loss, the latest of which came against Punjab Kings in Guwahati the other night, has put them in a spot of bother, considering the knockouts are around the corner. However, their last league match is against the table-toppers and Gambhir-mentored KKR side on Sunday (May 19) in Guwahati.

‘You’re not a newbie, start winning games for India’: Gambhir pushes Sanju Samson to utilise T20 WC chance

Team India will kick off their campaign at T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and USA in June, with their tournament opener on June 5 versus Ireland. Ahead of the match, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined on who should be India's wicketkeeper in the playing XI. With two in-form keeper-batters such as Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson in the squad, Gambhir backed Pant to feature ahead of Samson.

Gambhir -- the 2007 T20 WC winner -- told Sportskeeda, "I think only one of them will be in the starting side and whoever it is, India must back him ... both have equal quality. It's touch and go but I'd start with Rishabh because he's a left-hander and a natural middle-order batsman. Sanju in the IPL has batted at number three, but India's top-order is fixed."

Further, the current Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor stated, "Rishabh has batted at number five, six and seven. India need a wicketkeeper in that position as compared to a top-three batsman. A left-hander in the middle-order gives you that left-hand-right-hand combination."

"If India see that Sanju can score more runs at number six or seven, they could go with him as well," Gambhir added.

Meanwhile, the Delhi captain has 446 runs -- ninth-most -- striking at 155.40 with three half-centuries.

Thus, there isn't much to separate between the two. For India, Samson has a better strike rate than Pant in T20Is (133.09 when compared to his competitor's 126.37). However, the latter has played 66 T20Is as opposed to Samson's 25.

IPL 2024: Sanju Samson given out controversially in DC contest, argues with on-field umpires - WATCH

Match 56 of the IPL 2024 edition took place on Tuesday (May 7) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium where Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Sanju Samson's Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 20 runs in a high-scoring affair. Asked to bat first, the home side posted 221-8 courtesy of Jake Fraser-McGurk's 50, Abhishek Porel's 65 and Tristan Stubbs' 20-ball 41. In reply, Samson-led RR managed 201 for 8 despite their captain's impressive 46-ball 86.

Samson kept his side in the run-chase with his effortless striking from one end. However, his dismissal shifted the momentum in DC's favour as the home side pulled off a 20-run win to remain in the playoffs race. In the 16th over, by Mukesh Kumar, Samson tried to smack a length ball over long-on but failed to get the desired elevation as Shai Hope completed a good catch at the deep. The West Indian came up with a brilliant effort to prevent a six as he tip-toed around the boundary and completed the catch. Nonetheless, it was a touch-and-go scenario as it didn't seem like a clear catch. Here is the video:

The decision was sent upstairs for a check where Michael Gough adjudged it out after only one angle of the replay was checked. Thus, England's 2009 T20 World Cup-winning captain Paul Collingwood feels Gough could've checked more angles before coming to a conclusion.

On Star Sports, Collingwood said, "Goughy (Michael Gough) is a very good friend of mine. So I am going to defend him (chuckles). Maybe he could have given himself another angle, just to double-check. Because it was so, so close. Those decisions and those moments make a huge difference. So maybe he could have given himself a little bit more time."

The Englishman added, "I know in the IPL, the organisers want to quicken things up, the umpires are being told that they have got to quicken the decisions. I think, on this occasion, a couple of more angles, just to clarify could have put everybody at ease. That might have been the best way to go."

At the post-match press conference, RR director of cricket and head coach Kumar Sangakkara opined on the dismissal and said, "Depends on replays and angles. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage, so it happens in cricket. Different perspectives. Even if we have any other opinion, we will share it with the umpires and sort it out. I thought irrespective of that dismissal, RR still should have seen the game home."

After Samson's departure, RR's run-chase fell apart as they only managed 201 for 8 with Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh and Kuldeep Yadav shining for DC in the death overs. Despite the 20-run loss, RR remain at the top of the points table with 16 points from 11 encounters.

IPL 2024: 'Third umpire should've...': Collingwood's take on Samson's controversial dismissal in DC-RR tie

Rajasthan Royals (RR) rode on skipper Sanju Samson's majestic 46-ball 86 but ended up managing only 201 for 8 in response to Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals' (DC) 221 for 8 in match 56 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday (May 7), at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. During the run-chase, RR were on course for a win till Samson's stay. However, the keeper-batter fell for a well-made 86 in the 16th over, bowled by Mukesh Kumar. It was a length ball as Samson tried to clear the ropes towards long-on but found fielder Shai Hope in the deep.

Hope did well to complete the catch but it seemed he had touched the ropes at some point. As a result, the on-field umpires took the decision upstairs where third umpire Michael Gough adjudged it out after only one angle of the replay was checked. This led to a long debate between Samson and the umpires as the RR captain made his displeasure known before making the long walk back to the pavilion. For his argument with the umpires, Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees by the BCCI.

Rohit Sharma will lead the national side while Hardik Pandya will be his deputy. Among the big names, both Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson have been included in the provisional squad, while KL Rahul has been left out. The likes of Rinku Singh and Shubman Gill have been named in the reserves.

Talking about the squad, Rinku Singh -- who averages a whopping 89 and strikes at 176.23 in 15 T20Is -- and KL Rahul are the two big names to miss out. Rinku has done incredibly well in the limited chances he has got for Team India in the shortest format. However, Shivam Dube, Hardik and Ravindra Jadeja got the nod ahead of him. Dube has been in top form, both for India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the past year and, hence, got rewarded.

Meanwhile, Rahul was also in contention but missed out with Pant -- who made his return to competitive cricket during IPL 2024 -- and Samson edged past the former due to their form in the ongoing IPL season. Pant and Samson have been among runs in the 2024 edition, fourth and sixth-highest run-getter respectively, with a better strike-rate than Rahul.

The regulars such as Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, etc., have been included in the squad while Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have also been included in the team.

T20 World Cup 2024: India’s squad to be led by Rohit Sharma; Pant and Samson in, Rahul out

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag shared his playing XI for India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is set to pick India's T20 WC squad by end of this month or by May 1 (which is the cut-off date for all participating teams) as the mega event kicks off soon after IPL 2024, on June 1 in West Indies and USA. Sehwag picked his playing XI, with some glaring omissions.

Speaking on Club Praire Podcast alongside former Aussie cricketer Adam Gilchrist, Sehwag's playing XI didn't comprise Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson. The legendary Indian opener opted between Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh as the lower middle order batter whereas also snubbed Arshdeep Singh. Instead of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer, the ex-Indian opener picked Sandeep Sharma -- who has been in fine form for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing IPL 2024 edition. In match 38, on Monday (April 22), Sandeep starred in RR's nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI), in Jaipur, courtesy of a brilliant 5 for 18.

Speaking on Hardik, Sehwag mentioned that the star all-rounder will make it to India's final squad, however, opted against including him in the final XI due to his poor run in IPL 2024. Hardik has been unimpressive as a leader, for MI, and not created much impact with both bat and ball. Further, Sehwag's spin bowling unit comprised Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja with no room for Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal. Both have been impressive in IPL 2024.

RR vs MI Match Highlights: Rajasthan do a double on MI, win in Jaipur by 9 wickets

After Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by nine wickets, in chase of 180, during match 38 of IPL 2024, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh lavished huge praise on Sanju Samson and feels he should be part of India's 2024 T20 World Cup squad. The squad is set to be announced by the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee by end of this month. The mega event kicks off soon after IPL 2024, in West Indies and USA on June 1. Further, Harbhajan also made a bold claim, stating that Samson should be groomed as India's next T20I captain.

Harbhajan took to X, formely Twitter, and wrote, “Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock is a proof of class is permanent. Form is temporary @ybj_19 and there shouldn’t be any debate about Keeper batsman. @IamSanjuSamson should walk in to the Indian team for T20 world cup and also groomed as a next T20 captain for India after Rohit . koi shak??? Riding on Sandeep Sharma's 5 for 18 and Yashasvi Jaiswal's 104 not out, RR beat MI by nine wickets at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Monday evening (April 22). While rain also made its presence felt in the game, it couldn't hamper RR's dominance as the one-time winners continue to march ahead in IPL 2024. After eight games, the table-toppers have won seven and are sitting at the top with 14 points. Speaking of Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter has led with aplomb, ably rotating his bowlers and making good field changes, whereas he is also the second-highest run-getter of the ongoing season, with 314 runs at an average of 62.80 and a strike-rate of 152.42 -- including 3 fifties with a top score of 82*.

Courtesy of his form, Samson is a strong contender for the T20 WC. As far as India's T20I leadership, the 29-year-old is certainly showing all the signs to become the captain but has a long way to go before becoming a strong candidate. As of now, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill are also some names being considered as India's next captain in white-ball format.

IPL 2024: Jaiswal thanks Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli after roaring back to form with 104* in RR vs MI tie

Rajasthan Royals (RR) will take on Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday (Apr 22) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in the reverse fixture. RR had beaten MI earlier in the tournament in Mumbai comfortably by six wickets. Currently, the Royals are at the top of the points table with six wins in seven games while MI sit in seventh position with just three wins in seven games.

Royals have done very well in the tournament on the back of their batters, while MI have been off and on with both bat and the ball. Royals skipper Sanju Samson (276 runs), Riyan Parag (318 runs) and Jos Buttler (250 runs) have stepped in at different times to win it for the team.

MI, who started the season with three consecutive losses, saw a turnaround with three wins in the next four games but still lack consistency. Rohit Sharma at the top of the order has been sublime while Jasprit Bumrah has proved to be a menace with the ball.

Apart from those two, no other Mumbai player has been able to reprise match-winning performances on a regular basis. While Gerald Coetzee is second on the wicket-taking charts with 12 scalps, his economy touches 10 and Suryakumar Yadav, since his return, has been both a success and a bust in four innings. MI skipper Hardik Pandya's form with both bat and the ball has also been a concern for them.

As for the Royals, their bowlers have chipped in at all times with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal leading the attack. Royals definitely look a better side to win as they have done most of the times this season barring a close loss to Gujarat Titans.

Mumbai, on the other hand, must click if they wish to enter the mid-table logjam and move further up to make it to the playoffs.

IPL 2024, RR vs MI Match 38 Preview: Mumbai look for crucial win against rolling Royals

The 2024 T20 World Cup squad selection announcement is just around the corner, and BCCI selectors are not taking ‘surprise picks’ as an option, as per the latest reports. Although Virat Kohli’s selection is imminent despite several media reports of decision-makers being unhappy with his strike rate, mainly against the spinners outside of the Powerplay, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee also focusses on bringing Rishabh Pant back on the board.

The Indian captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Agarkar are said to meet on April 27 in New Delhi to finalise the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in June in the Caribbean and the USA.

As per the latest reports, Rohit and Kohli will be the marquee players, with the selectors also keen on putting Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill on the team sheet. Ace T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav will be on that flight for the T20 WC, accompanied by CSK’s star all-rounder Shivam Dube, KKR finisher Rinku Singh and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya.

In the keeper’s category, with plenty of options, the selectors are said to be picking returning Rishabh Pant, with KL Rahul and Sanju Samson emerging as top contenders as the backup. Dinesh Karthik, who thus far has scored 251 runs at a whopping strike rate of 196.08 in eight contested games this season, falls behind KL and Sanju in the pecking order.

As for the top performers with the bat in hand, RR’s Riyan Parag and SRH opener Abhishek Sharma, both might not be considered as BCCI wants to try them first in the bilateral series.

No sign of Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal – IPL’s highest wicket-taker and among the top performers this season, continues to stay on the sidelines as selectors are convinced with Kuldeep Yadav as the lone spin-bowling option. Two all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, will also be on that flight to the USA and West Indies.

While Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh will be the other bowlers. Pandya or Dube, if picked, will be the seam-bowling options for Captain Rohit.

Meanwhile, the 20-team tournament will begin on June 1, with India placed alongside arch-rivals Pakistan in Group A. The marquee clash between two heavyweights will take place at a newly built stadium in New York on June 9. Hosts USA and their neighbours Canada are the other two teams in Group A.

Ace T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav will be on that flight for the T20 WC, accompanied by CSK’s star all-rounder Shivam Dube, KKR finisher Rinku Singh and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya. ALSO READ: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma should be India's openers at T20 World Cup, reckons former captain Sourav Ganguly In the keeper’s category, with plenty of options, the selectors are said to be picking returning Rishabh Pant, with KL Rahul and Sanju Samson emerging as top contenders as the backup. No sign of Chahal Yuzvendra Chahal – IPL’s highest wicket-taker and among the top performers this season, continues to stay on the sidelines as selectors are convinced with Kuldeep Yadav as the lone spin-bowling option.

No signs for Chahal, Parag as BCCI selectors gear up for T20 World Cup squad selection – Reports

Rajasthan Royals skipper and wicketkeeper Sanju Samson effected a MS Dhoni-esque run-out in the match against Punjab Kings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday (April 13). Samson collected a throw from mid-wicket area at a distance from the stumps but managed to throw the ball just in time to dislodge the bails and find the batter short.

The run-out happened in the 18th over of Punjab's batting when Ashutosh Sharma guided a ball from Yuzvendra Chahal deep into the field. The batters, Liam Livingstone and Sharma, completed the first run comfortably but Livingstone turned back for the second run. He reach down the pitch a few steps before returning back.

As for the match, PBKS eventually lost the thriller, second on the trot, as RR managed to chase the 148-run target with three wickets and one ball left. Punjab bowlers did well to make a match out of nothing but Rajasthan's West Indian duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell kept their cool to take Royals home.

Hetmyer scored unbeaten 27 off 10 balls while Powell scored 11 off 5 including two fours in the penultimate over as Rajasthan shook off their only loss of the season, which came in the last match against Gujarat Titans.

Earlier, Punjab kept losing wickets at regular interval with only Jitesh Sharma (29), Livingstone (21) and Sharma (31 off 16) being able to cross the 20-run mark. All five Rajasthan bowlers managed to take wickets as PBKS posted a below-par 147/8 in 20 overs.

This was Punjab's fourth loss in five matches as they currently sit at eighth place in the 10-team points table while Royals enjoy the top spot with five wins in six games.

IPL 2024: WATCH | RR's Sanju Samson does MS Dhoni-esque run-out vs Punjab Kings

Australia great and former Indian Premier League (IPL) winning coach Tom Moody has backed Rajasthan Royals to continue their impressive run in the ongoing season despite their defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in their last match. According to Tom Moody, RR will not repeat the mistakes they made in IPL 2023, where they missed out on the playoffs after having made a good start to the season. RR sit at top of the pile heading into Saturday’s contest and will face Punjab Kings in Mullanpur.

Moody backs Rajasthan Royals

"I think it's going to be a really interesting game because Rajasthan, I think, were shocked at their loss. You know, they're running high, and I don't want to say too early, but it's nearly... You don't want them to go down the same path that they did last year where they started the season so brilliantly well and then just fell in the hole. I don't think that's going to happen as such," Moody said on the Star Sports Show.

RR lost to GT on the final ball where Sanju Samson was criticised for not using Trent Boult while being in control of things. It was a late cameo from Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan who did the business for GT, condemning RR to their first defeat. However, according to Moody, Samson’s side has learned the lesson and will maintain momentum in the playoff race.

"They've learned a lot from last year. But this is a threat because Punjab are punching above their weight at the moment, and they're at home. They like playing at this new venue. Arshdeep is back in some form, swinging that new ball. So there's a few things going in Punjab's favour here," Moody added.

After the PBKS game on Saturday, RR have a run of games that include Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before they get into May.

Jos Buttler has regained his form while Samson is also firing on all cylinders for the side. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been silent so far but will be expected to fire when his side takes on PBKS on Saturday.

IPL 2024: Australia great predicts ‘no deja vu’ for Rajasthan Royals despite GT loss, says ‘I don’t think...’

Rajasthan Royals (RR) will look to continue their unbeaten streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they take on Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans(GT) on Wednesday (April 10). The contest at the Sawai Mansing Stadium in Jaipur will be a repeat of the 2022 IPL final where GT got the better of RR in a one-sided contest. However, the tables have turned in favour of RR as they come with momentum on their side in Wednesday’s contest.

Rajasthan Royals have been in great form this year and have so far beaten Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Delhi Capitals (DC), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). All eyes will be on Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson with the former scoring his sixth hundred in the last match against RCB. While Yashasvi Jaiswal is yet to fire in IPL 2024, they still have a reliable middle-order batting line-up.

GT on the flip side have suffered back-to-back losses and a defeat on Wednesday will see them on the end of an unwanted record. GT have never lost three consecutive IPL matches and will have a task to avoid that unwanted feat. Their two wins so far have come against MI and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

IPL 2024, Match 24: Rajasthan Royals vs Gujarat Titans – Match preview and result prediction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season witnessed a high-scoring affair as Sanju Samson-Jos Buttler steered Rajasthan Royals (RR) to their fourth with of the season. A day highlighted by Virat Kohli’s eighth IPL hundred was overshadowed by Buttler and Samson as they led RR to an emphatic six-wicket win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Sawai Mansing Stadium in Jaipur. The win also helped RR continue their unbeaten run and now top the standings with eight points in four matches.

Samson-Buttler steal spotlight in Jaipur

Chasing 184, Rajasthan Royals lost impressive Yashasvi Jaiswal on the second ball of their innings and were reduced to 0/1. However, a resolute stand from Samson and Buttler steered the hosts to a commanding position. The pair put together 148 runs for the second wicket and took the game away from RCB. Samson was dismissed for 69 off 42 which consisted of 8 fours and 2 sixes in his innings. Buttler, playing in his 100th IPL match, scored his sixth IPL ton to help RR secure the two points and maintain a perfect record.

Earlier, it was a Virat Kohli show as he carried his bat having scored the eighth hundred in the IPL history. Virat scored an unbeaten 113 off 72 deliveries and was seen in fine form and stitched a partnership of 125 runs for the opening wicket. Glenn Maxwell’s (1) poor form in the IPL continued while Kohli was in scoring mood. Kohli scored 12 fours and 4 sixes to help his side to a total of 183/3 in 20 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal against his former side scalped two wickets while Trent Boult ended with one.

IPL 2024: Sanju Samson-Jos Buttler stand overshadows Virat Kohli’s eighth ton as RR continue unbeaten run

Following a record-breaking tie in Hyderabad between SRH and MI the other night, the action moves to Jaipur in the west of India, with Rajasthan Royals hosting Delhi Capitals in game 9 of IPL 2024. Captains Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant will go one-on-one against each other with a greater goal in mind, leading their respective sides to ultimate glory in this competition and sealing a place in the XI for the T20 World Cup later. Here is the match preview and result prediction of RR vs DC.

Match preview

Following an emphatic win over Lucknow Super Giants in their season opener at home, with seamers, mainly the left-arm duo of Trent Boult and Nandre Burger, doing the damage with the new ball, Rajasthan took a lot of positives heading forward in this tournament.

The rise of Riyan Parag as a dependable batter in the middle order, glimpses of which were visible in the LSG game, will further help RR openers to play freely, knowing they have players to handle situations down the order. With the dominant top three in Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Captain Sanju Samson, the host sits in a better position heading into this contest.

The dynamite attacking duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell (if picked) can tear into any bowling attack on their day, while Sandeep Sharma will again hold the keys for RR in this crucial tie.

Meanwhile, the touring Delhi side has a lot to ponder after going down in their first game of the season against Punjab Kings in an away clash. Although Delhi had its bases covered, the ploy failed to click on that day, leaving them to make the right changes for the RR tie.

With three seamers – Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma and Mukesh Kumar returning to the training ground, Delhi will be ready to take on the spirited Rajasthan side.
Captain Pant will want the top-heavy batting order to fire to put Delhi in a commanding position.

IPL 2024, Match 9, Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals: Match preview and result prediction

Former Australia and Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Steve Smith has made his choice of 'the complete side' of IPL 2024. While many have named Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as their top favourites, Smith believes Sanju Samson-led RR are the team to look out for in the ongoing edition. Smith, who led the one-time winners Rajasthan in IPL 2020, feels the 2022 finalists have enough firepower to claim their second title this year.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of RR's home game versus Delhi Capitals (DC) on Thursday (March 28), Smith said, "Home teams are winning at the moment. I am not ready for them to break the trend just yet. They (RR) look the complete team this year. They have got all the bases covered. Their spinners, I'm really keen to watch again. Chahal and Ashwin are outstanding. The two guys up top are potentially the two most destructive in the IPL. If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat."

Smith also opined on skipper Samson, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match with an impressive 52-ball 82 in RR's season-opener versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday (March 24).

Over the years, Samson has been a huge name in the IPL and a regular for RR. However, he has had a tendency to start the season with a bang, with his willow, before fading away towards the end.

Smith feels that this could be something which is on Samson's mind but stated that the RR captain looks in a good space at the moment.

The Aussie cricketer added, "He played beautifully, got them the win. He seems to be playing well, looks to be in a very good place. He looks comfortable. He is striking the ball really well. I think his captaincy was outstanding and he would want to continue that form. His seasons in the past have tapered off a bit in the end, and that will be weighing on his mind. To keep that standard up and leading from the front."

RR started IPL 2024 with a 20-run win over Lucknow and will hope to make it two wins in a row on Thursday evening, when they host Rishabh Pant-led DC.

If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat." Also read: IPL 2024: 'Captain can't go at 120' - Irfan slams Hardik Pandya for his rusty knock in SRH vs MI high-scorer Smith also opined on skipper Samson, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match with an impressive 52-ball 82 in RR's season-opener versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday (March 24). RR 2024 updated squad: IPL 2024, Rajasthan Royals, probable XI, ruled out & replacement, Captain, schedule

India batter Sanju Samson has revealed the motive behind his power-hitting game, saying he wanted to create his own style of batting. Samson has been on fringe of the national team for long but hasn't gotten regular chances. In the matches Samson has played for India, he has been criticised for throwing his wicket away after getting the starts. The wicketkeeper-batter, however, seems unfazed by all of it ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition which starts March 22.

“I always wanted to stand out with the way I bat… create my own style. No matter if it's the first ball, I wanted to go out there and hit a six. That was the shift in the mindset. I wanted to do something different. Why do we have to wait for ten balls to hit a six? That was the motive behind the development of my power-hitting,” said Samson on Star Sports.

Talking about his chances to cement his spot in the Indian team, Samson opined: “When you are playing cricket in the world's best country... India is no.1 in the world… the number of players, the number of talent and the competitions we have... a guy from Kerala. if he has to come and cement his place in the national side, he has to do something special.”

The Rajasthan Royals skipper also said that he's happy how things are coming and mentioned that he wants to do something spectacular for the side he plays for.

“I put in a lot of effort during Covid times, a lot of people helped me. I'm very happy, things are coming on nice. The grind keeps on going, I'm never satisfied. I just want to go on and keep doing something spectacular for the side that I play for,” said Samson.

IPL 2024: Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson reveals 'motive' behind his power-hitting game

R Ashwin heaped praise on Sanju Samson and has labelled the young Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain as 'phenomenal' ahead of the Indian premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which gets underway on March 22. Samson has been leading the RR franchise since IPL 2021 and led them to the final in IPL 2022. In IPL 2023, the Royals ended fifth and narrowly missed out on entering the playoffs. Ashwin, who has been part of the Royals since 2022, feels Samson is a phenomenal leader and also dwelled on his on and off-field bond with the keeper-batter.

Speaking to Star Sports, Ashwin told, "On the field, I try and give him inputs as I see how the game is panning out. However, that relationship off the field doesn’t come on the field. It’s generally that younger brother, elder brother sort of a relationship off it. On the field, we are able to switch off."

He further opined, "I do what he wants and give my inputs and then he takes what he wants and gets on with it. I find Sanju as a young captain, he is able to differentiate, and demarcate both which is phenomenal."

Ashwin added, "Sanju is extremely funny off the field. I am not sure a lot of people understand that or probably know that. It’s a problem of perfection a lot of people battle how you see someone on the ground and how they are off it, it’s completely different."

At present, Samson is gearing up for IPL 2024 whereas Ashwin is currently part of the Indian team who will take on England in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, starting on March 7. He will join the Samson-starrer RR franchise soon after the end of the India-England Test series.

IPL 2024: Rajasthan Royals spinner R Ashwin heaps praise on 'phenomenal' captain Sanju Samson

India might have clinched a thriller against Afghanistan in the third T20I in Bengaluru and, with that, a T20I series win, yet they have plenty to ponder over with regards to filling in the best keeper-batters in the final 15 for the T20 World Cup later this year.

With the ‘problem of plenty’ starting to bother the team management, head coach Rahul Dravid rues the lack of T20Is in the lead-up to the marquee event, saying the upcoming season of the IPL will serve as the only parameter for squad selection for the 20-team tournament in the Caribbean and the USA.

While Jitesh Sharma played two out of the three T20Is against Afghanistan, Sanju Samson got the chance in the final game, getting out on a first-ball duck. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan is currently unavailable for selection owing to mental fatigue, while KL Rahul and returning Rishabh Pant are waiting in the wings to get slotted in. With five top-notch keeper-batters available for selection, Dravid feels it’s a good headache for the team.

“We have a few wicketkeeping options. All of them are in the mix. We have seen Sanju and Jitesh (in the India-Afghanistan series). We also have Rahul, Kishan and Rishabh. We just need to see how it pans out in the next few months and take a call on what is the best way forward,” Dravid told reporters after India’s win over Afghanistan in the third T20I.

IPL to serve the purpose

Though Dravid is happy with several players raising their hands for the limited slots in the team, he is firm on his thought that IPL serves the purpose of helping the selectors and the team management to finalise the keeper-batters for the T20 World Cup.

“It’s nice to see that there are some options (ahead of the T20 World Cup) who have put their hand up, and certainly shown that they’ve got skills to address."

“(There are) some areas that we might need some addressing in, and we were thinking about it. But unfortunately, we really won’t have much cricket as a team anymore. We will obviously have the IPL, and everyone will be watching closely to see how some of those guys play and what are the slots we need to fill in the team,” Dravid said.

Meanwhile, ahead of the ICC event, India will host England for five Tests, starting on January 25 in Hyderabad, and then the IPL gets underway from March end onwards.
