The path for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been cleared to retain talisman wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni as an uncapped Indian player ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. The development comes as IPL has decided to bring back an old rule which would treat Indian players, who have been retired for five years, as uncapped players.
Dhoni, who retired in 2020, has continued to play IPL since and CSK will be shelling out only INR 4 crore or $500,000, should they decide to retain the 43-year-old.

"A capped Indian player will become uncapped if he has in the five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant season is held, not played in the starting XI in international cricket or does not have a central contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian players only," read the document shared with the franchises by IPL as reported by the cricket website ESPNCricinfo.
Over the last couple of seasons though, Dhoni has been giving away responsibilities to other players as the news around his retirement makes rounds.
He gave the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024 while coming down the order majorly as a boundary hitter only. The rumours around his retirement have been ripe ever since 2023 season and a knee surgery after that.
The 43-year-old said at a recent event thatCSK are waiting for retention rules to come out to decide on the future course of action.
Dhoni is one of the most successful skippers in the IPL, leading CSK to five titles - the joint most in the league history along with Mumbai Indians.
He has been with the CSK since the league's inception in 2008, playing 264 matches and scoring 5,243 runs at a strike rate of 137 and an average of nearly 40.
