Updated WTC 2023-25 points table after India's historic win in BGT opener
India hammered Australia by a whopping 295 runs in the first Test of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) at the Perth Stadium, Perth, on Monday (Nov. 25). The fourth and penultimate day's play resumed with Australia tottering at 12-3 in chase of a mammoth 534 and lost Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja before lunch. Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) looked good and at their attacking best but only managed an 82-run sixth-wicket stand as Australia got dismissed for 238 early in the final session. Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match (for brilliant match figures of 8 for 72) and excellent leadership as India bounced back from being 150 all-out on Day 1 to register a famous and humongous win over Australia, in Australia.
Talking more about the BGT opener, India were without regular captain Rohit Sharma (who missed out due to paternity leave). On Day 1, Bumrah-led visitors took a bold call to bat first and were bundled out for a paltry 150, with Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood returning with 4 for 29. In reply, India replied strongly, and at the end of the day's proceedings Australia were reeling at 67-7 (courtesy of Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj's regular breakthroughs). Day 2 saw India dismiss the hosts for 104, taking a slender 46-run lead. The day's play ended with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitching an unbeaten 172-run opening stand.
India batted excellently on the following day with Jaiswal (161), Rahul (77), and Virat Kohli (100*) taking the score to 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target. The day ended with Australia losing three wickets before Indian seamers continued to dictate terms, on Monday, to eventually emerge on top.
India need a 4-0 series win over Australia to directly qualify for the WTC 2025 final, to be held early in June 2025. The visitors have surely started the BGT 2024/25 series on a high and regained the top spot in the WTC standings.
After the famous win, India's stand-in captain Bumrah said, "Very happy with the beginning. Were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded after that - very proud. Played here in 2018. I remember that when you start here, the wicket is a little soft and then it gets quicker and quicker. Was relying on that experience. This wicket was a little less spicy than the last one. We were really well prepared so I was telling everyone to have faith in their process and ability. On a given day, experience does matter, but if you have faith you can do something special. Can't ask for anything else. Jaiswal has had a great start to his Test career. This was his best Test innings probably. He left the ball - he has an attacking nature, but he left the ball well and played long. About Virat - I didn't see him out of form at all. On challenging wickets it's hard to judge if a batsman is in form. He was looking good in the nets. Always enjoy the support (from the crowd)."
