Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has backed India youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal to come good in the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar series in Australia. The statement comes after Jaiswal played a crucial role in India's 2-0 win against Bangladesh during the recently won two-Test series.
Lara says that Jaiswal would have to make some adjustments mentally but once done, the batter will play good cricket in every condition.
"Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you're going to play good cricket in any conditions," said the former West Indies skipper on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Tuesday (Oct 8) as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo. "I expect to see him do well."
Lara further explained his point and said: "The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions. I say this with a pinch of salt, because conditions in India have changed.
"With the IPL, you've got international players coming - and you're feeding your players a different level of competition, which is great. So I don't think there's much that he (Jaiswal) has to do technically. I just think mentally [he has to adjust]: travelling away from home, [and] playing against Australia; Australia, on their shores, are a different beast."
Jaiswal made his Test debut in 2023 on the tour of West Indies and has since scored 1,217 runs in 20 innings of 11 Tests at an average of 64 with three tons and seven fifties along with the highest score of 214 not out.
Jaiswal scored twin fifties in second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur and took his tally of Test fifties this year to eight - the most by an Indian batter in a calendar year.
India are scheduled to play New Zealand next in the three-Test home series which starts October 16.
