England will lock horns with Mitchell Marsh-led Australia in the third ODI, of the five-match series, on Tuesday (Sep 24). The match is a do-or-die scenario for the Harry Brook-led hosts as they trail 2-0 in the series. Thus, the hosts need a win to stay alive in the series versus the current ODI world champions. Given that England are an inexperienced side, without regular captain Jos Buttler, it won't be an easy task for them to stop a rampant Australian line-up.
After losing the series opener by seven wickets, in defence of 316, England hosted Australia in the second ODI at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday (Sep 21). Opting to bowl first, the Brook-led side dismissed the star-studded Australian line-up for 270 in 44.4 overs. From Australia, Alex Carey (74) and captain Marsh (60) ended as the highest scorers as pacerBrydon Carse claimed a three-fer, but conceded 75 in 10 overs. Apart from him, Adil Rashid,Jacob Bethell and Matthew Potts ended with second scalps each.
In reply, the new-look England batting line-up couldn't chase down the score with the home side ending with 202 in 40.2 overs. Many English batters got starts but none converted them into big scores or held one till the end. Jamie Smith ended with a top score of 49 as Mitchell Starc returned with 3 for 50 along with two-fers from Josh Hazlewood,Aaron Hardie and Glenn Maxwell.
Will England stage a comeback and keep the series alive in the third ODI? Only time will tell.
