Earlier I would be scared...: Yash Dayal recalls facing Rinku Singh onslaught

In match 13 of IPL 2023, in Ahmedabad, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were chasing 205 versus hosts Gujarat Titans (GT) and needed 29 off the last six balls when Rinku Singh slammed five successive sixes off Yash Dayal. Following Rinku's onslaught, he became an overnight star whereas things turned upside down for Dayal, who was part of GT's victorious run in their maiden IPL season in 2022.

Since then, Dayal's name has been associated with that over he bowled to Rinku. However, the Indian pacer has learned from that over and feels the experience improved him overall.

In a recent chat with ESPNCricinfo, Dayal recalled that over and said, "There was this panic inside me. I was also thinking: Why do I have to always bowl the main overs? Now I understand that I bowl the main overs because the team needs me. I am the main guy who can win the match...To be honest, even today it plays in the back of my mind frequently. Earlier I would be scared, but now I enjoy confronting any situation."

Dayal had a miserable run in IPL 2023, following the onslaught from Rinku. However, he played a key role for his new franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024, ending with 15 scalps from 14 games and, more importantly, taking responsibility in the death overs and doing fairly well. He carried his form in the domestic circuit, earning a maiden Test call-up for the Bangladesh home series opener.

Recalling the moment of earning his maiden Test call-up, the 26-year-old said, "When I got a message from a friend saying I'd been selected in India's Test squad. I didn't believe him, but a little later I saw my name in the Test squad on BCCI's website...Immediately I kept my phones aside to try to process what was happening inside me emotionally."

"I had become too emotional because getting a Test call-up is very big. I started recalling my journey across the years. I then called my family: my mother and my sister were equally emotional, tears of joy were rolling down their faces," Dayal added.

Dayal isn't part of the Rohit Sharma-led India playing XI for the first Test versus Bangladesh, which got underway on Thursday morning (Sep 19) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
