Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai lifted the prestigious Irani Cup on Saturday (Oct 5) after they beat the Rest of India on the first innings lead in Lucknow. The win saw Mumbai end their 27-year drought to win the premier domestic competition. Sarfaraz Khan was the hero of the hour for Mumbai and was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 222-run knock in the first innings.

Having entered the premier domestic competition of Indian cricket as Ranji Trophy champions, Mumbai faced a resilient Rest of India squad. Sarfaraz was the hero of the hour for Mumbai as he scored an unbeaten 222 along with skipper Rahane as he missed out on a hundred. The former India skipper scored 97 in the first innings, and Mumbai scored 537, with helpful contributions from Tanush Kotian (64) and Shardul Thakur (36).
Shreyas Iyer also scored 57 while Mukesh Kumar scalped five wickets during his spell and Yash Dayal and Prasidh Krishna both bagged two each.
In response, the Rest of India scored 416 as Abhimanyu Easwaran’s 191-run knock was the feature of the innings. He got a good helping hand from Dhruv Jurel as the Rest of India fell short of the first innings total by 121 runs, handing Mumbai the decisive advantage which proved vital.

Mohit Avasthi scored 51 with the bat before the match was declared a draw on Day 5 of the contest as Mumbai ended their second innings at 329/8. With not much time left and Mumbai having a massive lead of 450 runs, both captains decided to shake hands with one session to go.
This is Mumbai’s 15th Irani Cup triumph having last won the title in the 1997-98 season when they beat the Rest of India by 54 runs.
