Things went from bad to worse at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida on Wednesday (Sep 11) after Day 3 of the only Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand was called off due to heavy rain. The stadium located in the National Capital Region (NCR) hasexperiencedheavy rains in the last 12-15 hours resulting in poor filed conditions. Already under the spotlight for lacklustermanagement, the rain late Tuesday nightworsened the playing conditions meaning there would have beenno play on the third day with the toss yet to take place between Afghanistan and New Zealand.
Having seen the opening two days of the only Test match get washed out due to poor playing conditions, it went from bad to worse on Wednesday. Heavy rains struck the New Delhi Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday evening, meaning the already sub-par conditions of the stadium became worse for playing. Considering the poor management and sub-par equipment to improve the conditions had the rain stopped, the umpires decided to call off Day 3.
The weather forecast also played a key role in the umpires and match referee’s decision as more rain is expected to hit the region.
The decision also means the historic Test match is on the brink of unwanted history as the toss is yet to take place. With Day 3 being washed out, there will be only two days for the Test match to take place, in case the playing conditions are deemed fit.
In case the match does not take place, it will go down in the International Cricket Council (ICC) records as an abandoned contest. Thiswill be the first match since December 1998 when a Test match has been abandoned without a ball being bowled. New Zealand and India were the last teams to be involved in an abandoned Test match.
