Musk deems Apple’s OpenAI partnership a security violation

Elon Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur, announced on Monday that if Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, he will prohibit their gadgets from his firms. Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and social networking platform X, described the action as "an unacceptable security violation."

Musk clarified on his stance in a post on X, saying, "And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." This strong declaration comes on the heels of Apple's unveiling of new AI functionality in its apps and operating systems, developed in collaboration with OpenAI. The tech behemoth claims that these AI integrations have privacy "at their core," leveraging a mix of on-device processing and cloud computing.

Musk was sceptical, stating, "It's patently absurd that Apple isn't smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!"

Industry response and scepticism

Industry experts were eager to respond to Musk's contentious viewpoint. Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, believes Musk's restriction is unlikely to receive widespread support. Bajarin explained, "Apple is attempting to teach consumers that the private cloud is just as secure as storing data on a device. Apple rarely sees that (data)."

Musk’s history with OpenAI

Musk's criticism of OpenAI is not new. The entrepreneur co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but sued the organisation and its CEO, Sam Altman, earlier this year, alleging that they had deviated from the original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. Musk has since launched his own AI venture, xAI, as a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

xAI’s ambitious growth

Musk's xAI, which intends to provide an alternative to ChatGPT, has grown rapidly. The firm was valued at $24 billion during its most recent investment round, which included $6 billion in series B funding. This rapid growth demonstrates Musk's determination to lead the AI innovation race.
